I would really love to know who has rated my projects, I know some, but only because they left a comment and I seen it on thier activity wall that they rated my projects. It would also be helpful if you recieved a lousy rating on say a pair of kids pants that all ready rated well, it would cause you to wonder why the lower rating. If you had access to who rated and knew that maybe they only made mens or ladies clothing then it would help to understand the ratings. It would also keep the rating abuse down, I have happened apon one members project page and all of her projects were rated only once and ALL were pore ratings.

Overall I’m not too happy that we now have the rating feature. It makes it kind of a competition over here. However, I think that the privacy should be kept and members should be allowed to rate anonymously. Maybe there is a possibility to round up ratings and not down how it seems to be currently.

I agree, the rating-function is an unnecessary stress-factor. It IS relevant for project instructions and patterns, it’s very helpful both for the person who’s posted them and those who anticipate using them to see the rating, but for projects – no. Some are more talented than others, and it would be really sad if those who struggle and beginners loose their enthusiasm for sewing due to poor ratings… (I don’t have to love everything that’s posted here, I love that people enjoy sewing, and that’s enough really!).

I totally agree. Ratings make sense for techniques and patterns. On projects it just discourages new sewers.

The post from brownlow3 regarding the child’s trousers is an example of how careless wording can cause ill-will. I feel that comments like, “Looove it”, “cute” and “OMG!” say nothing about the quality of the work. We ought to look for attention to pressing, careful stitching, and correct placement of details, while keeping in mind that this may well be a beginner. If a useful criticism needs to be made, do so on a wall or by PM. We are here to help not hinder. Personally, I have quite enough to do here and elsewhere that I wouldn’t waste my time checking out other people’s walls for ratings details. Things like, sewing, scrubbing the sinks, reading a good book are a better use of this 24 hours. Cordially, Nehmah

I also agree that the rating on projects isn’t that useful since is arbitrary and optional. I don’t want to know who doesn’t like my project (much), but I miss the “who’s favorited this project” feature from the old site. With “favorites”, it was like saying a bunch of people gave my project a thumbs up, and I could see who they are… which I think is a concise way to give positive feedback. I like that favorites are saved to my studio (acting like a book mark), so I prefer to favorite projects because I can find them again. If I have a specific comment, the option to write one is already there (I also like this).

I’m not wild about ratings on projects either, although I think they could be used more for techniques and patterns than they are. I want feedback for my techniques! But I’m not sure what role ratings serve for the projects…

I agree that ratings should be kept private, but I am strongly unhappy there being any form of rating at all for projects. A pattern or technique rating helps you determine the quality of that before purchasing or downloading, but it’s totally unnecessary for projects. Other than adding competition where there should be none, it could genuinely put people off posting projects for concern over what people will rate it. It’s so very negative and useless.

I agree with everyone that the rating feature is only usefull for patterns and techniques and not usefull at all for the projects. The new option to include instructions and a ‘make it’ tag in the projects might have made it seem obvious to also make everything ratable, but in my opinion, if anything, then a ‘like it’ button would be better. This would make some sense in my eyes, sometimes I don’t have any usefull comments to give but would just like to show, well, that I like something. Any rating would be counterproductive.

Good point with the “like it”-button, I agree!

Yeah, I’m not ok with ratings.

I miss being able to comment on the patterns. I know a lot of the comments people left weren’t exactly useful, but some people actually put helpful information about the patterns.

I agree. Comments on patterns and also on instructions can be really, really helpful (both for the person who posted them and for those using them).

Last time I published photos at the ‘burda fashion’ website. This photoforum is mainly frequented of russian women who are very perfect in sewing and often interestet in competitions. I received votes and also left them. I was everytime happy to receive feedback with comments and also withe votes – but now I discovered these side and I am convinced that I don’t want votings any more. It is good enough for me to notice the ads of views. Please, in future… after relaunch of burdastyle and burdafashion… no more votings and competitions!

I don’t even use that feature when I comment on others projects! I just had a quick look at my ‘studio’ and the only thing that has been rated is something I’ve put on since the new site has been up and only 1 person has rated it. That feature seems very redundant to me when it comes to the projects.

I agree and here’s the solution:
instead of a 1-5 rating, do a “thumbs up” count.
That way really great projects will have a larger number of thumbs up, but beginner sewers (like me) will be happy to just get one or two.

I am here because I am new to sewing and new to this site. I had a project rated a two and I had no idea why. I was trying to understand what it meant. Was it because they don’t like the fabric, it was sloppy sewing, or did I not give enough useful information?
I agree with the others. I don’t like the rating system for projects. If someone doesn’t like what I made, that is fine but if they want to critique my sewing ability it would be much more helpful to know why I was given a low rating. Since I am new to sewing, I have no idea what I did wrong.

Hey there, Welcome to Burdastyle and congrats on starting to sew! You definitely should not take the vague ratings personally. I suggest you ignore them and have fun sewing.

I’m a little miffed at the rating thing.. Whats the point in it really? Maybe I don’t know the site well enough and you can search the top rated projects? I would rather a thumbs up thing if it is to be anon.

I’m a bit dismayed by the rating system. If it served some sort of constructive purpose I’d be okay with it, but lately I’ve seen some wonderful projects rated very low. I can imagine low ratings are really hurtful and discouraging, especially to beginning sewers. If I had received a low rating on one of my first projects, I probably wouldn’t have used Burdastyle again.
I’d prefer a thumbs up too! I loved how the people who favourited your projects were displayed on the old Burdastyle – I think that brought a nice sense of community to the site.

I would go with wzrdreams on this one, ignore the rating system… There’s maybe nothing here that has more members’ comments than that, with minimal response from burdastyle and none of the responses that i’ve seen say that they intend to change or take off the ratings anyway.

How does the rating system work anyway? Do you actively have to click on something when you look at a project and give it stars? Some of it may be down to not knowing how it works. Occasionally if i have time, i’ll look through someone’s projects and maybe leave a comment saying I like it but I’ve never noticed an option to actually rate it. And what would I be rating it against anyway – how much I like the look of it, how difficult it looked to make, whether it was a nice choice of fabric for the pattern, whether I liked that particular project more than the other projects posted by the same person? There are way too many variables. And does the site average out the ratings? I took a quick look now at someone’s project to see if it had been rated and it had 5 stars. If I dropped that to 3stars for example, whose star rating would be displayed to the next person who looked at the project? Mine or an average between the 5 stars and my 3? I’d never use the rating system unless the person posting the project had specifically asked for feedback on what he/she could have done better – like, if I ever get round to posting any of mine for people to look at, there’s one particular dress I’d love advice on re the straps – I’d prefer people to leave comments though rather than just give it 1star.
