Just wanted to let you know that I have reported the new spam and it should be taken care of again. I hate the spam and just wish they (spammers) would leave our site alone! Very frustrating!

Thanks Sew4my3! I just don’t understand how the same member can keep on spamming the whole forum. Isn’t it possible to delete his account?
Apr 16, 2010, 03.02 PMby gedwoods
They’ve created a new logon, a variation on the old one. I think the earlier one was deleted, but there’s nothing to stop a spammer from creating a new logon each time… It worries me. Is there not a way to track the internet address of the registree – I know this won’t catch every case either, but if the same computer/server tries to log on through different accounts, it should be possible to catch them….? Or am I being naive?

This member is someone trying to promote a website selling merchandise, not a seamstress:

I found the text a bit weird so checked out “her” website and found one of her dresses for sale: http://www.sinomart.com/Alluring-Empire-Strapless-Knee-length-Bowes-Satin-Cocktail-Homecoming-Dresses_p11376.html
It looks way too industrial and big scale to be appropriate here. Spam, I say.

Hi candyjoyce and bekaem,
We hear your concerns regarding this member. The difference between a project and spam can be a fine line. The team is working on a set of standards for what defines a “Project.” As our community continues to grow, this is an ever present issue we are faced with. Feel free to email me with your thoughts on what defines a “Project”. I’d love to hear what you think!

Everything this member posts is purely to promote her shop. Nothing is a genuine “I made this to wear” project. The continued posting of her fabric is definitely not a PROJECT. It is a real shame that the front page gets so cluttered with this kind of spam. This has been going on for a few months now, she seems to have burdastyle’s blessing?! There may be a fine line between a project and spam, but these listings are very obviously spam… http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/the-small-blue-flower-prints-in-white-thanks-to-mom

I agree (with ccsinspirations).
Spam it is. Projects it ain’t.
People who sew for a big company don’t mean that that company should get to use Burdastyle for free advertising.
Not good for the community.

I am looking forward to seeing this standard definition for projects. After being really annoyed with regularly seeing Asia Queens mass produced ‘projects’ on the front page, along with the odd fact that it seems ok with Burdastyle to leave it there (Asia Queen’s profile and projects are still up on this site right now, even though they have stopped showing up on the projects page), it got me to wondering.. what exactly constitutes a project on Burdastyle?
First of all, what is Burdastyle about?
The headline of the website is “Burdastyle, for people who sew”, and in the FAQ’s it is described as thus, “BurdaStyle is a place for people who sew or would like to learn. Our aim is to bring the traditional craft of sewing to a new generation of fashion designers, sewing hobbyists, DIYers and anyone looking to sew something.”
So my personal interpretation of this statement, along with my experience of the website as whole, is that it’s for individuals (not corporations) using their very own hands and brains to create objects out of general sewing paraphernalia, ie fabric, thread and notions. It’s a great place to learn skills, download patterns and share projects. My interpretation of a ‘project’ is something that is physically sewn by the individual represented in their profile. Definitely nothing mass produced in a factory.
However, I am no lawyer, so maybe my reading of the FAQ description is wrong, and it could indeed cover mass produced items from factories. Factory workers are people too right? So maybe instead of the factory outlet marketing arm having a profile on Burdastyle, the actual workers could post here. They could post pictures of the item they were assembling, the description sure would be interesting..
“I worked 12 hours and made 95 of these today, and earned the equivalent of US$1 an hour, (but I’d be lucky if I see that, because over 60% of garment workers in Chinese ‘special economic zones’ get paid below minimum wage, are faced with up to 150 hours overtime per month and have no written contract). I have one day off a month and joining a union is an arrestable offense. It’s boring and makes my eyes and neck hurt but hey, at least my lunch was delicious.”

A kinda ‘How I made a crappy ’wedding gown’ in 45 mins’ type of thing…
I think I prefer the stuff that is made with love, enthusiasm, all levels of skill, and the willingness to learn that we get on a regular basis here. :)

I do think Burdastyle should remove AsiaQueen from the website. There is not a single handmade project in her profile. Now she seems to use it to promote her shop and sell fabric.
As cute as her fabrics are, it would be sad if Burdstyle turns into a free advertising space for vendors of fabrics and notion, or of rtw clothing.

Hey ichigogirl,
Thank you for your comment, it’s been really interesting hearing everyone’s opinion on the matter. The BurdaStyle team is working on a resolution to the issue.

rachelnyc: thank you for your reply! I really, really don’t, however, understand why you are so generous towards asiaqueen, who obviously is a company and not a person and who is STILL promoting their fabric for sale and rtw-clothing here, compared to other companies who try to use this site for free advertsing. What makes you all want to keep them on the site? I don’t get it…

Now, another fabric shop has discovered burdastyle for free advertising:
Furugi Star
http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/floral-pattern-sets-3-fat-quarter-from-5-choices
And why is Asia Queen still not blocked even though her “projects” do not comply to the new definition of what a project is?
The project page is more and more turning into a fabric shop and in my opinion it is a bad business practice to let businesses advertise for free. Just think about the money you are losing in advertising through this…

Asia Queen has added 6 more fabrics for sale. TODAY! I really don’t understand the reasoning behind Burdastyle letting her clutter the Project page. She has contributed nothing that even remotely would count as a true project. Her only use for Burdastyle is to promote her fabric sales and the Silk company she works for. Why she has not been removed from the community?
Even with all the complaints against her, Burdastyle still lets her post anything she wants!?! I seriously have to ask, is she paying a fee to be allowed to promote herself this way? Is Burdastyle profiting from her posts? I don’t know what else could be the answer, but I would sure love to know! Thanks for letting me rant!

Imho there’s Etsy for supplies and Burdastyle for showing off homemade projects. Asiaqueen’s uninterrupted spamming of Burdastyle will make me avoid the Asiaqueen shop on Etsy.

Asia Queen, quite clearly, has no regard for the Burdastyle protocol in any shape or form, as new ‘fabric for sale’ postings are continuing to clog up the projects pages. Surely you have the power to delete her account(s) ?? This morning is the 25 May, 2011 and she’s posting thick and fast.
