I don’t quite know what section of the forum this goes in…… I was hoping someone could shed some light on what makes a person a featured member? Who decideds? Is it based on visits to the items sewn, is it the peson with the most uploads etc…..

Also whe you have a ’Best of ’ selection of items, like Best Of Jan 2010, what makes them the best? Is that to do with ratings too?

I hope someone can shed some light on the matter so that us mere hopefulls stand a better chance of getting there if we know what makes them so!

Thanks :)

I always thought the staff chose featured members because the member had great creations, style, and creativity, but I could be wrong. I’d also like to know.

(As for the ‘Best of’ part, I think it’s the same thing I said before)

I am glad others are curious too :)

Meaghanlr92 – I hope that they choose a little more fair than that but you could be right….. :(

Anyone that has been a featured member know…?

I, too, am curious. It seems like a lot of the active early members were selected as Featured Members, but there have been quite a few more recent members selected over the past year… And three seems to be some effort for cultural diversity … but the actual criteria used remain mysterious…

Hm, I think it seems like they especially like to feature members who are quite new and who make a lot of creations that are at least fairly well photographed, that are a bit more inventive than average and nicely finished. And also older members who fill the criteria, but fairly new members seem to be more common (or is it just that I notice them more since I recognise them less?). I was featured when I was quite new at the site, I wasn’t told how they had chosen but of course it’s a huge honour no matter how! I think the criteria that Meaganlr92 put up sound fair enough, after all the featured members are a way of promoting the site rather than a reward to them (though of course, it’s a big pat on the shoulder!). I got the impression that the “best of” projects are the ones that are featured on the site, or the most commented, the highest rated and also the ones that the Burdastyle-team simply like the best. And once again, it’s their site, and I would guess they run it to make the site successful rather than to be fair to all members (which I actually think is quite fair enough…).

I’m curious that a BurdaStyle representative hasn’t comment here yet, there seem to be a few members interested. I am too but not becasue I want to know how I personally can get featured, it’s just interesting, they have the feature so it would be nice to know how it’s selected.

      Hello kaitui kiwi,
Just wanted to let you know that this link and it’s listings were brought to the BS team’s attention yesterday. I am guessing that Alden will be getting back to answer these questions soon. You know I am a bit curious myself on this one.

Glad others are curious too :) Ichigogirl – it would not be fair if the editors selected based upon their personal tastes because it would be just that, a question of taste! A fair way would be if it was an item most commented on or most visited etc so you are giving the majority ‘vote’ so to speak, the chance to choose.

Still curious and waiting patiently ;)

I still think they choose based on talent and other things, but not with their personal taste. You can appreciate things without it really being something you like. But I still wonder why they choose some people, since they couldn’t have gotten to be featured based on amount of comments or views.

Annamarie: I actually don’t think that a website has to be fair… or even that it should be, but I’m sure the team notice that some members creations are very popular and keep that in mind when they choose which member to feature. I would hope that they also feature members whose creations get less attention than they deserve from the other members, to help the rest of us discover them. If the world was all about “by popular demand” I think it would be a rather dull place (though fun sometimes, just not so often). I wonder if you guys are unhappy about the selection of featured members? I haven’t even thought about the fairness-aspect of it all, but then like I said I don’t really think that “fair” should have much to do with it…. and the featured members so far have made quite different creations, so I don’t think it’s all about personal taste… Anyway, I hope you get an answer from the team soon ;-)

I am definately NOT Unhappy – I am just curious. If there is a criteria then it maybe useful to know, if not then not! Just curiosity, pls dont get me wrong :(

I totally agree that the featured members are great, some other members may aspire to be featured so they will find it useful and I am (like most here ) curios. I am new to the site, I did sign up about a year ago but I have only recently started to use the site so I am just finding my way :)

I’m not at all unhappy about the selection of members or “best ofs,” nor am I trying to get myself featured (I don’t even finish projects that often!). I’m just curious about it, especially since I don’t always recognize the members featured. From observation, it seems that the people featured, in one way or another, use Burda patterns and/or create their own works. Anyway, for me, it’s just a point of interest, and I do hope that a BS member comments on this soon… just for edification. :)

There was a post a long time ago about submitting work to be “featured” but currently there is no policy page for featured projects or best-ofs. I also would like to know how it works… I’ve never been featured and I wonder if I’m not up on my game enough for the decision maker or is it simply a matter of self promotion. Just curiousity… I’m not offended.

    Alden? Burdastyle?

If there are criteria like photography it seems a little unfair on those of us that don’t have the time/models/camera.

If you are looking for photo tips you can find them here: http://www.burdastyle.com/discussions/projects/topics/take-great-project-photos—2 in the discussions under photos. Also, check on the web for tips for your specific camera or see if you can find the manual that came with your camera. ( I had to go searching for mine this past weekend).

Hey All, Sorry for the delayed response there are some amazing things in the works that needed our attention. Choosing featured projects and members falls on the team’s shoulders. When choosing a featured member there are a lot of things that go into consideration. We are looking for an active member of the site who speaks to the BurdaStyle community. They have an avatar and their profile is filled out. Either they contribute in the forums, upload creations and/or talk on walls. They must have a fair amount of well made, beautiful looking creations. That being said, that photograph is important. It is very hard to appreciate a beautiful, well made creation if it doesn’t look good in a picture. Featured members aren’t decided based on when they join the site but rather how active they are. It’s hard to keep track of all 300,000 members and I know that some are creating amazing things so, if you have any suggestions for featured member please email them to team [ at ] burdastyle [ dot ] com.

As for featured creations they are picked out every Monday through Friday. I look for cool, well made, imaginative creations. A good picture never hurts here also.

The best of slide shows are images pulled from what has been featured daily that month. So 3 images a day 5 days a week for a month comes out to be around 60 images, from that we pull the best. We try and keep the number of slides to between 25 and 30 to really make it the best of the best.

So i think i have answered everything, if you have any questions just hit the reply button and i will happily answer you guys!

    Best A

I used to think it was based on the number of views and ratings for featured projects, but obviously not:)
