Hi

I am wanting to make some cycling / outdoor clothing and there are some fabulous sites in USA for technical fabric. I do purchase from Pennine Outdoor in the UK but their range, and also from Point North, is limited to mostly plain colours. Has anyone any tips re buying from outside UK as to reducing postage costs and import taxes as it makes the fabric really expensive. Or are there other sites in the UK that I am missing?

Many thanks for reading

I can’t help with the UK per se, but I order fabric from the US and I live in NZ. I’ve found that many places will now use the flat rate boxes and envelopes, so it’s important to maximize the number of yards you can fit in it (as fewer yards will cost the same in shipping). I fit 7 yards of fabric in a flat rate envelope last time I ordered, and shipping to NZ was about $13 US, not much more than it would be ordering in NZ. We don’t have to pay duty on orders below a certain value, so I haven’t had to worry about duty yet.

Thanks for the tip – I’ll contact the stores and check out their postal arrangements as this sounds like a good option.

Have you looked at Shelby in Finland? Postage from there is the same as from any EU country.

Shelby appear to stock similar products to UK and they also stick to plain colours. Many thanks for the reply though – much appreciated.
