Hi Everyone!

I’m working on another project that calls for lining but I seem to keep having the same problem with lining. When I’m done making the garment the lining is always puffy, like there is air trapped between the outside fabric and the lining. I don’t know if its because of the way I’m sewing it on where it might be too big or too small by a few 8th’s of an inch or if its the material I’m using which was labeled as lining fabric at the fabric store. Has anyone encountered this before and know how to keep it from being puffy? Another issue seems to be that the lining wants to show slightly outside the seam, tried using an understitch which helped a little bit but I’m not sure if I’m doing that right or not. Any advice to resolve either of these issues would be helpful.

Thanks!

You could try taking a larger seam allowance and see if that removes the excess. You could also try the bagged method of lining. This is done a lot on RTW. It’s easy and fast.

Also, is the pattern you are working with have a lining pattern piece included or are you copying the outer pieces and using them as a lining pieces. If so, your lining pieces should be a bit smaller than the actual garment pattern pieces. Let me know if this helps!

    One more thing.

What fiber content is the outer garment and what type of lining fabric are you working with. I’ve worked with some “lining” fabrics that are truly awful to work with and they look really cheap. I love working with China silk as my lining fabric. But, using it successfully will depend on what your outer garment is made of.

I did the larger seam allowance which shortened it up and put it close to my neck and shoulders. Can’t wait to wear it to CRF this weekend and post some pics to the project page.
