Hi sewing friends,
I’m about to move to Sydney from Cape Town, South Africa for a working stint of a few years.
Given the cost to ship things around the world, it’s looking like I will sadly not be bringing my sewing machine or fabric stash (I’m trying to pre-cut some patterns to send to myself!). in order to stay sane, I will HAVE to solve this problem when I get there.
Any ideas on where I can get a second hand sewing machine, or even rent one for a while? Or does anyone have a dusty old girl sitting in a cupboard that needs some love and a good clean and oil?
Also where are the best places to look for fabrics and bits and pieces?
I’ll be working in Milson’s Point – still not sure where we’ll be living.
I’m excited for this new chapter but it’s all quite overwhelming!

The main fabric shops in Sydney really are Lincraft and Spotlight. If you take the time to look around you can find some good, smaller fabric shops but it may take a lot of walking before you can find one. Depending on your budget, you can get some good, basic machines for only a few hundred ($400 approx.) Janome and Bernina are good – depending on your prefernece, but also check out online stores for a good deal. HobbySew currently have a few sales going online and you can pick up some savings. Good luck with the move and enjoy Sydney!!
