Hello bloggers!!

Both on and off of the BurdaStyle site, I’m in need of your assistance. I’ve been contemplating starting a blog (asap cuz my research says too many people sit around thinking about it but not doing…so I need some input doing) about my take on fashion and spotlighting entrepreneurs that I admire (some on this site yes!). To the many bloggers that have both new and established writings, please tell me if you will:

1) What made you drive to start your blog?
2) How does your blog help your creative process and social networking?
3) Would you do anything differently in networking so that you could get more traffic to your unique writings?

Thank you in advance for your discussion. I know from the projects and talent out there that creativity is brimming over!

    I don’t exactly blog…

I use Live Journal, and have a personal diary for friends (it’s a great way to keep in touch), and also belong to several communities for sewing interests. I post diaries of projects on the coms.

Since starting, I’ve made some brilliant new sewing friends, a few of whom I have met in real life. There are professional tailors, professional corsetiers, professional theatre costumiers, Live Action Role Play costumers, historical costumers, people who mend and collect old sewing machines, and folk who want work done…

It ups the anti a lot. You are no longer working in isolation, so there is ready access to folk who share you interests, and their very existence and example leads you on to new and better things, in processes, design, style and finishing. You learn all the time. As with Burdastyle, it’s all about sharing and learning from each other. There are some incredibly generous folk out there willing to share the knowledge.

Most of the groups I belong to START at the ADVANCED level and go stratospheric! Claire Schaeffer and some very experiences West End tailors belong to my tailoring forum. There are some world class corsetiers in the corset com. And the costumers are madly tallented, some working for places like Hampton Court. And while I sometimes flounder, I often stand back in awe, and always learn. Heady stuff.

Thanks KateXXXXXX! (that is a lot of x’s!)

I’m getting ready to graduate and start an internship, which could hopefully/will eventually lead to a job. My teachers are always telling me “networking is key in today’s economy.” Networking has always been important, but for certain industries it’s true! I’ll check out your live journal and see if that will work better for me. My parents also want to be able to follow what I’m doing, so whatever is most accessible. Thank you for all of your comments, they’re quite helpful.

I would blog if I could do it from this website as I loathe having too many Login in names and passwords.

So true Miss Sylver! I have a secret I learned from my mom, a true computer/internet technology expert: one user name and one unbreakable password for almost everything. I divert a bit from time to time. Thanks for replying!

I just started a blog and I never EVER thought I would! I use wordpress and I started it after becoming more and more involved in sewing here in Perth/Australia/BurdaStyle mostly after starting the Perth BurdaStyle Sewing Club. I started by writing on the ning.com site about our club meets and I “blogged” about my new Patrones magazine issues (which are hard to get here or find any local info on), then I realised I like to write about what I am up to in my small sewing world. I won’t write everyday or be photographing and writing up every step of my projects like some members (I’ll continue to post them here) but I do enjoy writing tutorials and I want to write about my BSC Perth club and anything exciting I find in sewing and I guess it’s a little experiment for myself and to get more involved, so I’ll see how it goes.

    Good luck to you :)

Yeah to positive peer pressure! :) Your blog looks good, brand new and good info is encouraging to me. The pop-up snap shots are great, and your links. One person’s comment on a blog starting article said “link like crazy!” to get people’s attention to your blog, bring attention back from/bring to other communities. I think a sewing club sounds like a great idea too! Thanks Kiwi!

Thanks so much for checking me out, I’m glad it sounds like I’ve got the right idea :) I just looked at all the blogs I love to follow and thought about what I liked that they did, like lots of links and photos that are thumbnailed (for fast loading) but that I can click on to see larger. I also like bloggers that list other sites they follow, it’s a great way to find new sources. Make sure you message me your blog addy when you get it set up :)
