Bubblewrap Tutu

Size_chart

Description

This is a Halloween costume I made a few years ago. As a computer scientist, there’s always a lot of bubblewrap in my workplace. As an environmental fanatic, I hate seeing packaging materials get thrown away. And as a lifelong ballet dancer, I sure do love any opportunity to wear a tutu. This garment is constructed much as a sewn garment would be, with darts for shaping, seams to connect the various pieces, and gathers for fullness. The fun part is, there’s not a stitch involved so it’s super quick. This whole costume was made in an hour or two. Every seam and gather is held in place from the inside using long strips of clear packing tape. The bodice is attached to the skirt with staples and the matching pink wings are stapled to the back of the bodice. The back closure is adhesive velcro. Tips for others: to reduce bulk at seams, gathers, and darts, just pop the bubbles in that area! Beware, bubble wrap does not breathe AT ALL. Even wearing this at an outdoor party at the end of October, I was doing some serious sweating. I DON’T recommend making anything with too much more coverage than this. A strapless ballgown, maybe. A flight suit? Not a chance!

Materials

Bubblewrap in various bubble sizes and various shades of pink and clear, clear packing tape, staples, stick-on velcro.

really good- a cute and creative idea, must have been a little hot though (lol) It's great to see people not just throwing away all this non-biodigradable plastic.
