Credit Crunch (invest (don’t)) Or Invest -The Stocking Exchange- (original Title)
This is an installation part of my BA final show in June 2001 at Middlesex University, Fine Art BA, London. The piece was exhibited at the Royal Society for British Sculptors in the same year and part of Arts Future, show curated by the Contemporary Art Society in London in 2002.
It consists of a front side jacket made out of felt with hand embroidered motif on hemp inside lining (a very old sheet that my grand mother gave me). Appropriation of an historical image (used in a historical manual to illustrate the discovery of the American continent by Christopher Columbus). I embroidered ‘The Stocking Exchange’ in reverse so it could red the right way on the mirror. I replaced the sword of the conquistador by a stocking (I used a nylon sock), to reflect on the exchange of non valuable goods against slaves/spices/gold during the triangular trade. The jacket piece rests on a glass table (picture 2) under which a mirror was displayed. The viewer would then be able to read what is inside the garment (picture 3).

That is so amazing! So thoughtful and thought provoking. I love the use of sewingin art. I'm so glad that you shared this with us, it is very interesting to see it and read about the ideas behind it. I wish I could have seen it when it was exhibited.
so cool! i saw this awesome extreme embroidery show at the museum for arts and design in NYC, this would have fit right in. did you embroider it with a machine or by hand?
This is really cool! I like to see that you use your skills is sewing to another project! And all the ideas around this are great! I love yours installation! Nice to see some of this different projects around here!
