Shrinking the Celestina

#7939 Product of Burda (14246) (4085)
Size_chart

Description

The pattern I used is the Celestina dress, but I changed the sleeves and made it out of a two side jersey fabric - the silver belt is the back side. I omitted the zipper and the bow at the back. I think I made the neck line larger too. Maybe a bit too large... Somehow I managed to wash it wrong this week - so it shrunk (shrinking jersey is weird indeed). I guess you can call it a tunic now... I should warn you that I found the waist a bit higher as my waist in the pattern too. Next time if I use this pattern I will definitely lengthen the bodice.

Materials

Jersey of a mysterious shrinking blend - it also has the surprising quality to turn transparent when photographed with flash.

    studying ...

It looks really nice, even shrunken ;) Cool effect with the left side as the belt. Like your version more than the original Celestina!

I love this! Very wearable with anything. You do a great job changing patterns to suit what you want! Never mind it shrunk, it looks good.

    reconsidering summer sewing plans

I think it looks quite good. You did a nice job adapting the pattern for a jersey fabric. However, you are right that the neckline seems very deep and the bodice very short. I've made Celestina myself and it wasn't like that, so I guess something might have gone wrong in the whole process of printing and putting the pattern together or maybe your backlength is longer than the 'standard' for your size (in which case lengthening the bodice is definately the solution). The neckline may also have stretched a bit while you were sewing it, getting larger than you intended. Also, shrinking jerseys have a tendency of shrinking not so evenly, so in your case it may have shrunk more in length than in with. Since a lot of jersey doesn't shrink, I've been caught unaware by this mysterious effect a few times myself.

i think the neck line looks fine to me if u wear a black top under it but the dress looks fitted very well the waist is little bit high but it,s not showing very much about shrinking i think 100% cotton jersy shrinks more than the combined jersy i meen cotton/polyester jersy

Thanks for the comments. Lauriana: I actually made cut the neck line larger myself - I just didn't really measured it and it got larger as expected. But it is pretty steady - not gaping so it is not that a problem. The waist was a bit lower before it shrunk, but still higher than my waist. I guess you are right that I am longer then the standard! Shrinking jersey is indeed quite surprising...
