polka dots & sunshine

Description

Another refashioned creation!! My sewing time has been at an absolute minimum lately (school/work filling the rest), so I've been pulling out a lot of my thrift-finds to rework.

This dress started life as a rather dowdy, vintage Lanz dress. But I loved the cute sailor collar and bright polka dots! So out came the scissors, thread, and a little imagination!

I shortened the hem quite a bit, removed the sleeves and rebound the armholes. The neckline I lowered and then tacked in a piece of eyelet salvaged from another vintage dress. I originally had planned on a light, voile ruffle at the hem, but didn’t like how that looked. So for now I'm just wearing one of my favorite, vintage petticoats underneath. I might hunt around in my stash for some lace or something though… :)

This is all part of my "year without mass retail" experiment (see my main profile for a link), and I have to say its really encouraging me to think outside the box!

(Note: the final two images show the original dress…)

Oh wow, you have a real talent, you're so clever to see your cute 50's frock 'hiding' in the original dress! I find remakes sometimes more impressive than 'from-scratch' creations, because it really is a different kind of problem-solving exercise- you've done superbly here!

Its great what you've done. Just a few changes and it makes all the difference. I like your idea of a year without mass retail.

You are really clever. My daughter loves your polka-dot dress. I love your idea of not buying mass-produced clothing. I abstain from such purchases as much as I can. Though it's difficult as I work full time and have two children.
