I needed a skirt to wear for skating practice (roller derby), and all the suitable skirts in the shops were either too short or too long, and all of them were too small (I'm a fatty!). I had a clear idea in mind of what I wanted, and decided to have a crack at making it even though I haven't done any sewing for about 5 years! I spent half a day making this from scratch. I was happy with the final result, however the shapes of the diagonal curves need to be tweaked a little, particularly the top layer, and I made it in a rush so I didn't press it either, so the hems look a little untidy. Its actually a bit too small for me, I underestimated how much stretch it would lose after sewing the layers on...but this is good incentive to shed a few more kgs! I will look hot out on the rink in this soon!

Derby girl skirt design 'prototype'DescriptionMaterialsThe underskirt is lycra knit, and the flouncey diagonal overlapping bits are lightweight chiffon, cut on the bias. The waistband was a bit of an afterthought, I hadn't planned how I was going to do that so I just overlocked elastic to it and turned it in. Credits

Hey good to see another kiwi here! Your skirt looks very cool - is there roller derby up in Auckland? It'll look cool racing around the rink I reckon. Good job! Tauken
Very cute and playful!
Love the layers!
Wow! I haven't been on here for a couple of months, and just saw these comment... thank you guys! Well, I've managed to lose about 6 kgs since I made this, and last Tuesday I wore it (although it was a bit tight!) because we were on TV3's morning news programme Sunrise, Yeah, go Pirate City Rollers! Check me out wearing this skirt (I'm easy to spot, I'm the fat one lol)! http://www.3news.co.nz/Video/Sunrise/tabid/572/articleID/61442/cat/167/Default.aspx#video
This is great Munter...who ever thought that a sewing site would lead me to watch roller derby down under... Actually, I like the curved layers and may use the idea for a very different project, that of developing a skirt for tango dancers... you never know where inspirations leads... :)
