I made this without a pattern. I kind of just went for it. It's my dream dress: big petticoat, big skirt, rows and rows of vintagey lace, yellow pleated waistband, draped lace bust, v-shaped corset and a big bow.
I first made the pleated waistband. I used a tutorial from SewStylish magazine that involves a 12" diameter cement cylinder and tons of string. It was a thousand times easier than actually having to fold each pleat, I really suggest you buy the issue if you have to ever make pleats. It's got a girl in a brownish dress on the cover with like metal appliques on her dress I think. I can look up the exact issue if anyone cares. I first made it out of yellow satin but it looked too orangey so I redid it in the new yellow fabric. Then I made the skirt. I first made it out of cheap muslin (it's like 6 panels maybe?) and then worked from the bottom up sewing each row of lace. I dyed the lace using ecru RIT dye but left some white. Then I attached the waistband to the skirt. I made the bodice by draping lace on an old strapless bra on a dress form. The top piece of the left side becomes the bottom piece of the right side and so on and so forth. I attached the bodice to the waistband and made the corset with grommet tape and ribbon. I then made a giant tube, ironed it flat, sewed it on and tied it. Wala, finished dress.

good job! it looks nice, i like the back. :)
amazing! one of these days I'm going to tackle an entire dress instead of just turning out skirts. I love it.
i think this i amazing you did a wonderful job i like the idea of using the strapless bra and i love the pleated waistline great job. the skirt is very cute i have been saving lace for something simmler to this so thanks for the inspration!!!
Wow-- that must have taken an incredible amount of patience. Looks great though, and I hope you have a great time at your prom!
A fantastic job, considering you are only 17. I wish I had spent my childhood sewing my own clothes like you.
It's an artful job. I like the idea of sewing many strips of material, creating a 3D surface, and the variation in lace colour. It is kind of organic.
wonderful! i grew up in south orange, your prom may even be where my prom was. sadly, i did not have the creativity to make exactly hat i wanted. congratulations & have a blast!
