The Devil Wears Fake Prada

Description

This is my attempt to recreate the gorgeous Yigal Azrouël coat from the movie The Devil Wears Prada. I used a 10/2003 Burda Modemagazin pattern as the basis and made a lot of big modifications to it. This was supposed to be my "next big project" and after it started coming together, it just looked awful - like something out of a bad 1960s sci-fi movie. I made some more modifications and it continued to look awful so I left it hanging in my room for weeks unfinished, a big expensive disappointment on a hanger. Then I got a message from fellow BurdaStyler JJ that said "Let's finish our coat projects that we are not too crazy about anyway so that we won't feel so guilty and can move on. " Very wise indeed. I still feel like it looks kind of weird and doesn't have the elegance of the original- please offer your suggestions for improvement!

Materials

60% cashmere-40%wool blend (a lucky Ebay bargain!), cream satin lining

Credits

Yigal Azrouël for the original, Burda for the basis pattern that I modified to make this coat, and JJ for the final push!

waiting for her little girl !!

I think you did an amazing job, and the colour is perfect for winter. You did recreate the same style as the original, and the same class. Bravo ! And I want a white coat too !!!!.... :-)

    sewing summer clothes.

Are you kidding? It doesn't look any close to"awful" You did a great job. It looks so luxury, still elegance and well made. I love it! I wish I could afford the cashmere off white coat. If I ever do coat again, I will go for pattern similar to this.....I see that the original version has two vertical darts starting from shoulders to waist but you did the princess darts instead. This could effect the chest and collar area that made their coat hug the body better. They have hidden darts at the neckline/collar but you don't. ........................ way too busy for loads of sewing

'kind of weird looking'???? Absolutely not! I think it looks elegant, sophisticated and professionally made. I think JJ is right about those darts, but I like yours better. I love the way they meet the armhole. And I love the shape of your collar (the original one seems a little less wide, although it's hard to see through her hair)

Thanks for the compliments :) I don't think it looks awful after the last set of changes, but there is something not-quite-right about it that might not show up in the pictures. You guys are right about the darts though! I couldn't figure out what was going on with the front seams so I just stuck with Burda's princess seams, since they matched the seams on the sleeves. But it's darts and that's what makes the front of the original fit so nicely! I don't think I can change that now, but it's good to know. Also I think I've figured out that the sleeves are too baggy at the top. Oh well, still wearable. Diana-- if you have one too, I would love to see how yours turned out!

I think it looks great. you have inspired me, i've had a coat hanging on my form for almost a year now, it was something i saw on a magazine and decided to make. Same story, started from a burda pattern and after a couple of fitting attempts i still felt it looked horrible. I think I might give it another chance now. You did a beautiful job!

Beautiful coat. The simple lines add elegance to your creation. You will be the Snow White of Aachen this winter.

    finally sewing again

I flipped back and forth that first and last picture a total of no less than 10 times. You could fool me anytime with your Prada knockoff. That's a beautiful coat.

It's a fabulous creation once again. Does not come close to the word "weird-looking" at all! It has a sort or clean and elegant feeling to it. Too bad I can't wear coats here :(

Fantastic job! I also flipped between the original and your coat to see the reason you are critical but I couldn't figure it out. Your coat is missing one seam at center front in comparison to the original, but I have to say I like your version better, yours is more ... "clean".
