Ok I am new here and am really excited about the opportunity this site will give me to sew. I am looking for a sew along project to be working on next to my 9 year old daughter while I am teaching her to sew for 4-H. I say I am totally up for the Lydia shirt pattern. It will be really cool to see how this basic shirt can be altered with different fabrics and additions. Thats just my two cents.

I like the idea of Lydia, too! Because I would like to alter it A LOT, so it might be nice to see all the alterations. :-)

It doesn't look like I'll get my Shari completed for the end of the Shari sew-along, but I definitely could/would do a Lydia sew-along!

      Taking sewing lessons!

I would really like to make Lydia too but I don't have an overlocker (serger) yet (plan to get one but won't be for a while). Do you think I could make this with a ordinary sewing machine, if so what changes would I need to make ?

      Mpetersen74: I won't make Shari either. :-(

      Sabine: You're welcome. ;-)

Wenstupen: I'm going to sew it by hand. :-P

@wenstupen: You don't really need a serger to sew a shirt. Just sew it with an elastic stitch and maybe use a twin needle for the seams.

Wenstupen, I agree with Zora--you definitely don't need a serger to sew a knit top--I sewed several before I (very recently) purchased a serger. The areas that you'll need to watch for are the neckline and the hem. I typically used a narrow zig-zag (width = 1) for knit seams, and a twin needle on the hems/neckline.

It might take a little practice (definitely plan around with scrap fabric first), but sewing knits can quickly become addictive!

You'll also want to be sure to use a ballpoint needle in your machine (a Shmetz "universal" needle will probably be okay--a "stretch" or "jersey" needle will work even better).
