Shari and Desira were the favourite choices for this sewalong but add my vote on there and Shari came out on top!
We'll spend 3 weeks making this dress. Please post here and let us know what your plans are, your fabric choices, any alterations you may make and ask any questions you may have.
I will be sewing along this time and will post my progress on the blog as well as here.
I wonder if it's possible to leave out the lining and interfacing - I don't think I want the yoke being stiff.
Is there a way to determine if the zipper can be left out if using stretchy jersey? I hate back zippers with a passion. ;)
I'm with you Sabine... I'm planning on moving the zipper to the side (at the waist), and only lining/interfacing around the neckline. I'll be making mine out of a forest green rayon with orange and white flowers, and using an orange speckled cotton for the contrast....
Okay, I'm in. I think I'm going to use this fabric.(Let’s see if I can insert the image correctly!!!) It’s a georgette (I think). Trouble is I've only got 2 metres. I'm very short, so I can usually get away with less than what the pattern asks for, but I've never made a bias cut skirt before, and I imagine it needs more fabric. I've got to find some contrast too. The fabric I photographed this on is a good colour match, but it’s a shiny stretchy thing. If I don’t have enough for the dress, maybe I'll shorten it to a blouse?
Okay, I see what I've done wrong. Thanks for the how-to for uploading photos to the forum, Nikkishell. I guess I should have checked your steps first -- then I would have seen that I need an account on the web, such as Photobucket, first. I'll try again later, as my little boy needs some lunch now.
I would love to join, but I'm afraid I don’t have enough time for finishing it in three weeks. :–( Can join, even if I finish it later?
We have such wonderful reversible fabric at home, at one side shiny, that I want to use for it – the contrast would be achieved by using both sides… but I want to alter the pattern quite a lot, so I really don’t know how will it work.
I had the day off today, so I worked on (and managed to finish) my Shari. A couple of pointers: 1) I don’t think the interfacing on the yoke is necessary. I used a very lightweight interfacing, but the yoke still looks really stiff relative to the flowing fabric of the dress. 2) try on the yoke before you sew on the top and skirt. My yoke ended up too big, but I tightened it up by adding elastic thread to the back. 3) The top by the neckline tends to pucker after awhile. I looked at how to fix this, but I think it is just a design flaw with this dress. You could try using a larger seam allowance around the neck. All in all, though, I'm happy with how the dress turned out. It was much easier than I expected, and fits pretty well. I'll post pictures soon!
Here is my fabric choice.
I decided to go with the paisley that you all liked and instead of the blue piping i chose to use brown.
I made my own piping using Benedikta’s tutorial.
I'm in, I've finished cutting out the pattern but plan to toile this first. I hope to trial run it tonight and tomorrow. I haven't figured out which fabric as I am leaning to make this in a more seasonal (read heavier) fabric. Any thoughts?
So, I posted my Shari under my creations. I also found a good fix for the puckering around the neckline: sew a line or two of elastic thread at the shoulder seam and it makes nice, even gathers and gets rid of the puckering.
Okay, I'm back. Sorry about the delay. I wasn’t too sure about the whole Photobucket thing, but figured if you are all doing it it must be okay. So here goes (I hope I've got it right :P) — the fabric I mentioned in an earlier post (from my stash) — a georgette, I think…
I haven’t done much in this interval, because I got stuck on the resizing issue — the part I probably like the least about sewing. So Hopefully, I can catch up to you guys, soon. Nikkishell and Kallers your Sharis both look fabulous!
Lucelu-why not try the Shari dress in a wool fabric? I think it would love beautiful and would be so warm. ((Dreaming of a grey wool Shari with a contrasting piping, maybe red?)).
So I printed out the pattern and glued it together and started with some alterations on the skirt… I still am not sure if I will really make it in time, but I would love to, because I have matriculation on the 9th of November and it would be lovely to be able to wear this dress on that occassion!
And this is the fabric I want to use for it, both sides shown:

Ooh...I love the Shari dress! I actually just ordered some fabric the other day with this dress in mind.
Is it too late to join the sew-along?

Kallers- i'm looking forward to seeing your finished dress :)

Cute fabric Jellybean! It won't take long at all to catch up and there's still a week and a half to go before the sewalong ends.
