Yohji Yamamoto: This Is My Dream from on Vimeo.

2011 has been a great year for fans of Yohji Yamamoto (me included). After the heartbreak of watching both his New York store and New York office close over the past couple of years, then bankruptcy threatening to shut down his operations entirely, it’s been a relief to see the spotlight return to his talents as a designer and his contribution to fashion over the span of his 30+ year career. Earlier this year, Yamamoto released his autobiography entitled My Dear Bomb and now comes another peek into the life of one of the most thoughtful and fascinating designers of the last few decades with the documentary This is My Dream.

I am mesmerized by Yohji, can’t wait for his new documentary. It is a collaboration with his old friend who did his last one.

The jewelry is beautiful and generous,I have made a lightbox, so that I can take pictures of my jewelries without depending on the sun.I need to do too much editing after to get things to look right. I should probably invest in better lighting really! You are so talented! I am literally lost for words – your pieces are so beautiful!

An amazing designer. About two years ago the Western Australian Art Gallery held a Yohji Yamamoto exhibition, the clothing kindly lent by local ladies who had purchased garments over the last twenty or so years. It remains one of my favourite exhibitions I have ever seen. Looking forward to seeing the movie.

Absolutely enthralling! Thank you for this, I can’t wait to see the film, it definitely goes on my pile of “must see documentaries” for 2011! It is so refreshing to hear a designer talk about clothes and fashion from such a different perspective, and one that is, somehow, not very “western”.
