We had 60+ amazing entries in this competition and some hard decisions to make.
The skirts were scrutinized by the team and then sent on to Wenlan Chia, Founder and Designer of Twinkle by Wenlan, who made the tough final decision.
We would like to congratulate SewIThought on winning the grand prize consisting of a Pfaff sewing machine, Twinkle by Wenlan sewing fabric, sewing accessories by Coats & Clark, Whish Body Products, and an autographed copy of Twinkle Sews.
The second place prize goes to cam557! She will receive an autographed copy of Twinkle Sews, sewing accessories by Coats & Clark and a $500 Gift Certificate from Twinkle by Wenlan.
The third place goes to crazydavises, winning her an autographed copy of Twinkle Sews and sewing accessories by Coats & Clark.
Thank you for all your submissions to the Show Us Your A-Line skirt competition! Check out all the incredible entries and congratulations to the winners!

Congrats to all the winners! I hope there will be another contest soon so I can possibly submit an entry. I have been sewing only for a little over a year and thanks to Burda, my sewing skils have greatly improved.

Congratualtions to all winners :) I think SewlThoughts skirt is quite inspired, quite Alexander McQeen, well done.
This was my first sewing comp and was just delighted to get some votes in the slideshow, yipeee. Think I will be tempted to enter others now, thanks.

I was certainly not trashing anything, I just noticed the missing hem that is all. I’m sure it has one now. Otherwise I think it is a cute skirt and the overall styling is great! I did mine the day before and stayed up very late to finish everything. I do think the contest timeline was a little short Really girls, great skirts!

Wow, I got second place! Thanks soooo much!! Congratulations SewIThought and crazydavises, beautiful skirts! And congrats to all, there were so many fantastic entries!

Congrats sooo much to the winners! I do love the first place choice. I chose yellow also. Ah. So bummed that I failed miserably. Mine is 9/64. The photography is poor and in hindsight, the hem line is very unflattering on me. The hubby took the photo at a very poor angle… my legs are actually long in comparison to my torso, which you can’t tell from the picture. Also, can’t see it in the photos, but the underskirt is a regular cotton, and the vintage tulle is gathered over each pleat and attached by seperate panels. Hard to describe. I’d love to do a critique swap with any one else that’s game. Anyone interested? If so, feel free to send any additional photos that you submitted to starrbegley@gmail.com or let’s just get started here! : ) Ahhh… I guess it’s a good lesson learned to allow A LOT more time for finishing, styling and photography. I’m wondering how many of you, like me, whipped this thing up last minute between work and kids? Funny… (well, not really) but this photo was taken about 7 minutes after we found out we were being evicted and one minute before the hubby had to jet to a meeting he was late for. Ugh. Any other horror stories out there?
CONGRATS AGAIN to the lovely winners!!!!! Aloha!

I didnt whip mine up at the last minute. I would have freaked out if I did! I worked on mine all through the hoilidays. I dont have a horror story to tell, it went pretty well, but at times it felt like I was never going to beable to make it. But it all pulled together in the end which was great!

Well done to everyone who won – they look great :-)
I’m just wondering if it’s possible to find out what made these special for Wenlan Chia, just being nosey, and if there was any constructive criticism available for those who didn’t win?

Here’s my guess, judging from my first glance through the slideshow:
I think she was looking for alterations to the pattern that would be easy for other people to copy, and looked both significantly different and really good. The winner’s modification is simple: just a lace overlay – anyone could do it – but it really changes the skirt and looks fabulous. Second place is just the addition of pockets. Several people added pockets, but her photo is really good, and she didn’t add anything else complex. Mine is moved pleats and added a button closure (which was only because I didn’t have a zipper at the last minute!) — both are also relatively simple changes for anyone who might want to make a similar change to the look.

Congratulations to all the winner! I really like your skirt, Sewlthought! I think the idea is really fresh, brave, and inspiring! Love how you style it as well!

Well done to all the place winners, great work. As for those that missed out on a place, you should feel very proud of your efforts, there are some fine entries amongst all.

I like the raw edges. Especially in contrast with the lace. I’ve made several projects with purposefully unfinished edges. Congrats on the win!

I think all these skirts are great, but I can’t figure out whose is whose. I’ve read the comments, so I figured out that the winner is the yellow one, but who came in second or third? Please caption your photo or leave specific details in your blog entry.

I think it is a beautiful skirt, and I think that having no hem works with some styles.. This is a very classy skirt and I personally would prefer it hemmed but i guess not everyone has the same taste! Well done anyway!!

My lining wasn’t hemmed either and I still haven’t attached it to the zipper SA. You do what you gotta do to make it work in the time allowed. I think everyone who put forth the effort did a great job. Congrats!

Well done all – i chose 9 winners myself looking through and lots of runners up (including all three here in top places) so judges must have hard time. So nice to see all the different way you talented folk interpret the challenge

Congratulations Sewlthought, you did such a great job on your skirt! You did good workmanship and your fabric wasnt a bad choice at all! Dont take any notice of Shaydaisy. I actaully bought a skirt from a shop that hadnt been hemmed on purpose. It looks fine, and its part of the design.
Oct 20, 2009, 10.13 PMby joboenvogue
The judge was Wenlan Chia for a reason, and if she picked this skirt for a winner, you have no right to trash SewlThought’s craftsmanship. Her ideas are original, unique, and precise, and Wenlan saw something appealing, grounds enough for first place. BurdaStyle is about being a support team for other sewers and should be constructive, not for openly criticising design. Ever think that the hem was undone on purpose? In the future, please be good sports about competitions, and congratulate the winner on a job well done!

Thank you so much for the nice words… I understand not everyone will like every item but I appreciate the encouragement and support.
Yes the skirt is hemmed now for all of you who apparently care lol
