Enter to have your design worn by a musician performing at one of the largest music events in the United States!
BurdaStyle has teamed up with Style X to offer this fantastic design challenge opportunity to you, sponsored by BERNINA. Making it’s sophomore debut at this year’s SXSW Music festival, Style X is a premier fashion showcase, featuring emerging talent in the fashion and accessories industries, and attracting approximately 15,000 shoppers. The 2012 event will take place on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17 at the Austin Convention Center.
Check out highlights from the 2011 show:
StyleX 2011 Highlights from styleX on Vimeo.
To enter, BurdaStyle members must post one fashion sketch and one mood board as a project, detailing their dream rock star fashion look. At least one of each image must be posted within your final project upload on BurdaStyle.com. Please note that the title must include the word “Style X” in its title.
[Update 1/20/2012] – For help on how to upload a project, please go here.
All submissions must be uploaded by February 7 at 11:59 p.m. (EST). 5-10 sketches will be chosen by BurdaStyle, BERNINA and Style X.
[Updated 1/30/2012] – In the week of February 13th, we will announce and contact 5 winners. Each winning designer will then be given the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind look for a well-known musician featured at SXSW Music! Each winner will be responsible for sourcing their fabric and notions.
The winning looks will be featured on the Style X runway, and editorial coverage on the BurdaStyle blog.
This is an incredible opportunity for new and emerging designers to have their creations seen in front of large audience of industry leaders, and have their garments worn by a true rockstar!
Please see here for the rest of the official rules. Good Luck!

I’ve been dying for the news all week.

Willl we be able to get our garment back? I’m a little concerned about the following statements in the rules for entry. It seems odd for designers to give up their copyright to their work to Burda — maybe that’s just me…
“All contest entries become the property of BurdaStyle, Inc. and will not be returned and may be used by BurdaStyle, Inc. for any purpose and in any media in perpetuity.”
and for that matter:
“In addition, acceptance of a prize constitutes the prize winner’s permission and consent for BurdaStyle, Inc. to reproduce, publish, distribute, prepare derivative works of, sell, or otherwise use or make commercial use of any designs or patterns submitted by the prize winner in connection with his or her entry into the Contest, which permission and consent shall be irrevocable and subsist in perpetuity, without further compensation or authorization.”

Hello Syuzique,
Yes, you do get to keep the garments you make after they are worn by the musician on the runway.
When it comes to the terms, it is true that all contest entries become property of BurdaStyle as with everything posted on the site. This is just standard legal terms for sites such as ours. It allows us to publish the sketches of the winners etc. in future blog posts on our site and in other media. Without ownership we could not do that for instance.
When it comes to the design we do hold the right to it but that is as well merely safety precautions. You, as a designer, can of course do what you want with your design as well.
Best,
The BurdaStyle team

There are so many different styles of music on the SXSW website, any chance your going to narrow the list down?

Oh man, I really wish Anais Mitchell is one of the musicians, she’s my idol and she has such fantastic style! Pity that she’s technically folk and not rock, she has a very rock attitude to dressing.

Unfortunately she’s not listed but you can find all bands A-Z

She is listed (http://schedule.sxsw.com/2012/events/event_MS17214), that’s why I chose her specifically (Otherwise I’d choose Joanna Newsom, but that’s just wishful thinking)

Hi 117827,
We do not have a maximum number requirement for the contest submissions.
You must submit your sketches and mood board as a project. For help on how to upload a project, please go here.

Hi, I just wanted to know if a mood board was needed for each individual sketch? I planned to submit each sketch with the finished garment individually of the others…Or should I submit all sketches, mood board, and finished garments in one post?

Hi Fate’s Destiny,
Yes, a mood board is needed for each individual sketch. However, if one mood board inspired multiple sketches, you can submit each sketch as a separate project and include the same mood board.
One submission should include just one sketch and one mood board.

Hi David,
Thanks for clearing that up. Can’t wait! I have one more question though… Can we also show finished garments of those sketches or no?
Jan 20, 2012, 12.45 AMby rowanna78
I also think a few more specifications are needed. Is it for a man, a woman, what kind of rock?

Hi rowanna,
The final selection of musicians will be selected at a later time. Your sketch should be whatever you think you dream musician look would be. As SXSW features a number of genres, you are welcome to choose whichever genre that interests you the most.
You are also welcome to create a sketch for either gender, or you can do one for each.
Thanks,
David

Hi Sara,
You must submit by posting your fashion sketch and mood board as a project on your BurdaStyle profile page. To do so, click on your username and then select the “Upload Your Work” button at the bottom of your profile.
Please be sure to include the term “Style X” in your project title.

What do you mean by “mood board”?

Hi fashionfave,
A mood board is essentially a collection of visual inspiration that helps you in your creative process. I can be images of whatever you like, as long as it helps you to create your final sketch.

So will it be made up for you afterwards…or will you be expected to make it if you win?

Hi Blueshoegal,
The winner will be paired up with a musician to then create the garment, and will be responsible for making it.
That way, you can say you both designed AND created a garment seen at SXSW! :)
