Each month Singer Sewing Company hosts a sewing class for the employees at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (aren’t they lucky!). For our third installment of SEWING MADE EASY™ how-to video series, one of those employees, Jamila Jordan, joins Martha to show off how to make a super cute reversible purse using the SINGER® Curvy™ sewing machine. The template and instructions for this adorable bag are available here so you can whip up your own version at home!

For your chance to win a SINGER® Home Essentials™ SteamWorks™ Pro Iron, let us know in the comments below: what was your first sewing project? And don’t forget to comment to win on videos from the last two weeks here and here! You have until 9am on Monday, January 31st to get those comments in!

My first project was in Grade 8 Home-ec. I made Hammer Pants in an awful floral pattern. Thank goodness my taste has changed since then!

Making clothes for my Barbies with my Grandmother. She eventually bought me my own Singer machine so I would stop fiddling with hers ;-).

It must be an apron project in primary school. I could manage the hand embroidery at the hem but I remember having so much trouble with the then Singer treadle sewing machine. Eventually my mom helped me to complete it.

My first sewing project I remember was hemming tea towels at school, many years ago now. I will have learned to sew before then, but can’t remember what and where. Suella

My first sewing project was an apron with my Gramma, after I sewed it I cross stitched pictures on it to show symbols for the Iroquois Indians. ( I was doing a project for school) we made it out of a white cotton sheet. I was around 10 I think and whatever my Gramma was sewing I wanted to do to…..she was the best!!!

If you don’t count the apron I made in 7th grade, then it’s a dress I made for my daughter.

wow this takes me back years and years, not sure I wanna go back that far. haha

My very first sewing project was an apron, and I was already unsure of my sewing skills and theI found out my aunt was the volunteer teacher for the class. I used a pencil to turn thr ties inside out and sewed it into a tie. How embarrassing was that !!! would love to own a steamer!!!

My first ever sewing project was making teeny dolls out of my mother’s fabric scraps when I was little. My parents were the type who held out on giving us Barbies as long as they could so probably I was trying to attempt a recreation..

My first sewing project was a dress that I made 1 week ago.. i used an existing dres that I gad to cut out the pattern. I was so excited about it that I wore it out. Had some great laughs with my friends about my non straight stitching. Sewing straight is something I must master =) I picked it up late -I am nearing my thirties soon. Its never to late to learn how to sew.

The very first piece of sewing I attempted was to make a very sassy pair of undies that I had seen in a catalogue (of an expensive sleep wear clothing company). After a bit of research here on BurdaStyle I started to learn where and how to start making underwear, but to my horror I ended up with a pair of undies twice my size of my bottom!!! But I tried again and found where I went wrong, and just fell completely in love with the pair that I created. Since then I have made 6 more, adding elastic for a frilly look and bows and ribbon here and there, to create my own style. I have friends asking for me to make them a few pairs too which is so exciting!! I just have to bribe my hubby into getting me an Over Locker now! Thanks BurdaStyle for the help and inspiration for my new undies!! Who knows where this little creation will take me ;)

My first sewing project was when I was a junior in high school… The High School of Art & Design NY was having it’s annual Spring Fashion Show. Everyone was so excited because all these big designers of the time were donating fabrics, Norma Kamali, Calvin Klein, Betsy Johnson. I decided to do an eight piece Sportswear collection. At the time I’ve only sewn things by hand… small projects such as pilow cases, repairing hems and replacing buttons. My grandmother knew that it was going to be quite an endeavor, so she taught me how to use her sewing machine. It was the eighties… My pieces were very colorful and funky… It was very Perry Ellis meets Fiorucci!

I was about 7 years old when I made a yellow gingham scarf with attached ties (under my Mom’s supervision). After that I “specialized” in outfits for my Midge and Thumbelina dolls.

I think my first sewing project was a potholder. I made a single quilt block and turned it into a potholder for a report in elementary school.

My first project was a blouse sewn in highschool and later burned. I have come a long way with my computerized sewing machine. The bag project was fun and, when enlarged 300^ makes a nice grocery tote—can’t have too many bags! Ronime

The first sewing project I remember making was a hand-embroidered pillow, with flowers and leaves. My Grammy used to sew and quilt constantly, and she taught both myself and my little brother. I love to sew and am getting into quilting myself – it makes me feel connected to her, and my sewing skills are a wonderful inheritance.
