It was a Barbie purse. I was somewhere in the vicinity of 9. I think it was for a Brownie badge. Navy blue stretchy somethingorother fabric scrap. It was my first venture with the sewing machine, and my mom would tell you that it was like a duck in water. Unfortunately, there was a lot of years between then and now where it seemed like every time I looked at the machine it would malfunction. Luckily, I’ve gotten my mojo back…. for the most part.

When I was about 8 or 9 years old I took a sewing class at a place called Studio One in Oakland, California. I made a flared out 50s style jumper in yellow and white gingham. It was a super poofy skirt with suspenders that crossed in the back. I could wear it with my white uniform blouse with the peter pan colar on the weekends. It would also go well with my dress code required oxford shoes. With the left over fabric I made a matching headband.

Later that year circumstances changed and I no longer went to the private uniformed school but to public school. I was so proud of my outfit and so was my mother as she bragged to everyone that I had made my clothes. Well, when I wore this to the public school some kids walked up to me and broke out into the happy days song. “One o’clock, two o’clock, three o’clock ROCK!”

I was mortified and didn’t sew again until I was like 25, because I couldn’t affort maternity clothes.

I had a toy sewing machine and made doll stuff, around 8, then I got my girl scout sewing badge and from then on, started modifying clothes. Made my first skirt at 12.

when i was living on St. Croix, i took a sewing class and my teacher told us to make a outfit using a pattern that was easy… well i made a short pants and a tank top looking shirt, the whole thing was made of black linen. im kind of ashamed of it, however it has inspired me to try to improve and work MUCH harder.

Gosh my first sewing project…it has been so long ago. I think it was probably sewing the hem of tea towels for my Grandmother…she said I had to learn how to sew a straight line first. lol.

As far as I remember my first project was a small pillow with gathered corners. I think it’s still on my old bed at my parents’ house. It’s actually pretty nice. I was maybe 8.

My first project was a pair of white flared pants – hippie style. I hand painted paisleys on both legs, it took me like forever. I actually used the pants a few times, and they got a lot of attention. Not something I would be comfortable with wearing today. :)

My first ever project was in home ec in high school and it was a pair of shorts or a pillow can’t remember exactly! But I just got a sewing machine for Christmas and so my first projects with it have been pillow covers for every throw pillow in the house! I’m working on a dress next.

My first sewing project was a pair of pajama bottoms – they consisted of only one piece and taught me how to cut out fabric, sew a straight seam (the inseam), put a pair of pants together, how to hem, and how to put in elastic! My mom always uses a pair of pjs as the first project when she is teaching someone how to sew.

As a child, I would sew simple envelope handbag/clutches for my mom to take when she went out to dinner with dad. I would use whatever scraps she had on hand, and she always carried them proudly.

My first sewing project(s) were trying to make doll clothes as a six year old. I didn’t understand construction at all so they were all T shaped bits of fabric with a V cut for a neck. I’m sure that Barbie and Jem were extremely uncomfortable- at least when i managed to make the arm tubes wide enough for them to get into! I stopped sewing after my grandmother, who taught me to sew, passed away, but picked it up again five years ago. No one gets arm tubes that are too small now.

My first sewing project was in middle school, an apron. It had patch pockets, ties, facing, rick rack, a big hem. All the basic skills were included in that apron. The class was taught by an older woman, she was very sweet. That was over 50 years ago, and I still love sewing. An apron is a project I often use when I teach other people how to sew. I’m going on 8 and 9 now. Susan
