My first sewing project that I can remember was a robe for my dad one Christmas. I had my mom’s help as she was teaching me but I did it! I even remember that he had that robe and wore it for almost 20 years! Guess I did a good job.

I made boxer shorts in my home economics class in high school. I was very fortunate to have a teacher who said,“There are many easy methods for making boxer shorts. We will not be doing any of them. I want to challenge you because once you learn these intricate aspects of sewing, you’ll be able to make anything.” It was true! I draw upon the knowledge I gained from her curriculum, even now 18 years later!

I honestly don’t remember what the first thing I sewed was. I do know that the first Girl Scout badge I earned was for sewing. It must have been an apron or something along those lines. I do remember making a plaid vest in 5th grade. My mom showed me how to lay it out so that the plaid matched. She watched as I sewed to make sure the fabric didn’t move. It turned out great and I didn’t have to rip anything out. Of course, I wasn’t so lucky a few years later putting in my first zipper for my 4-H sewing project. Lots of ripping out, but it turned out well enough to earn a blue ribbon. I still have one of my mom’s 4-H sewing projects. She made a beautifully tailored gray wool vest and lavendar/gray plaid wool skirt. I was actually able to wear it(before kids). It should fit my daughter in a couple of years.

My first sewing project was an apron! It was at a swing class and that’s what the teacher chose to teach us the basics.

Bean bag frogs were my first sewing project back in the 70’s when I was about 11. Once I made one, I was hooked and made about 100 for gifts and for fundraisers. They had big green eyes and were made out of scrap fabric…any material I could find was turned into a frog….and filled with beans. Heavy frogs, but kids loved them.

I tried to sew a voo-doo doll out of orange and white plaid fabric.

Haven’t thought about THAT in forty years!

My first sewing project was a storage roll for my paint brushes. I’ve since made many, many of them, but the first was was pretty sloppy. Some of my better ones are posted in My Studio.

When I was 10 years old my sweet grandmother taught me how to sew on her Singer treadle sewing machine. She was so patient with me, and taught me how important it was to sew perfect straight stitches. My first project on my own was a pencil skirt, and I remember how proud I was of the end result. My grandmother passed away when I was 12, and my mother inherited the machine and I continued to use it throughout my high school years. When I joined the Marines, my mom gave it to me to take to my first home. Many years of marriage, children and deployments later, I still own and treasure that sewing machine, and it still works! One day I will pass it down to my youngest daughter who is named after my grandmother and hopefully she will pass it down to her daughter (or son) and they will keep passing it down for many generations to come. It’s the main reason why I only buy Singer Sewing Machines, they are made to last.

Wait a minute, I was so wrong, my VERY FIRST project was more than 15 years ago, silly me, i got a piece of scrap fabric and cut my very first top based on another top I loved, it was all hand stitched and turned out a bit tight, but at that time i thought “if i succeed at this project, I’m meant to sew”, funny, it turned out ok, but I did not take up sewing until 3 months ago, when I did my son’s pj’s…crazy destiny…

My first sewing project that I recall was a red a-line skirt with a zipper and a waistband, made in home ec class. It turned out nice and I loved wearing it, but I needed lots of help to get it looking that way! Poor Ms. Thomas gritted her teeth a lot with me as her student!

My first sewing project was probably a bag that I made in home ec in Grade 7. Unfortunately, I went on a trip while it was being graded and a friend was supposed to pick it up. I don’t think she did because I never got it back :( I do still have the pencil case I made in Grade 8 though!
