Each month Singer Sewing Company hosts a sewing class for the employees at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (aren’t they lucky!). For our third installment of SEWING MADE EASY™ how-to video series, one of those employees, Jamila Jordan, joins Martha to show off how to make a super cute reversible purse using the SINGER® Curvy™ sewing machine. The template and instructions for this adorable bag are available here so you can whip up your own version at home!

For your chance to win a SINGER® Home Essentials™ SteamWorks™ Pro Iron, let us know in the comments below: what was your first sewing project? And don’t forget to comment to win on videos from the last two weeks here and here! You have until 9am on Monday, January 31st to get those comments in!

My first memorable project was a pillow i made for my mom when i was about 8. I hand stitched the word “MOM” on the pillow. She unwrapped her present, holding it upside down and exclaimed (in a heavy german accent) “VOWWWWW!” I sadly replied, “It says Mom, not wow…”

Well, I learned to sew when I was 10 or so, so I can’t tell you for sure what it was—but I think it might have been a skirt.

My first sewing project was a pink satin lacy pillow with sequins that I made for my mother for mothers day when I was 5 years old and we still lived in Mexico where I attended private school. It was beautiful and it was my first proud moment in sewing. We were taught at a very young age the basics of sewing and I am glad for it cause it’s something that to this day I enjoy doing. It has helped me in my art works and in my life. Sewing is an Essential skill everyone should know.

My first sewing project was a comforter and shams for my bed when I was a teenager. I did not have a pattern so I winged it. I still have the comforter and still use it on cold days curled up on the couch. :)

It was a Chanel costume to my Barbie from white-gold material and I was about 8. I have a basic Singer sewing machine I got 18 years ago. I love it because it has never been any problems with them. It’s a so reliable.

For my very first sewing project, I made a halloween costume. I had always thought that the little poem “I’ve never seen a purple cow. I never hope to see one. But I can tell you here and now, I’d rather see than be one.” was very clever. (I don’t even know who wrote it or where it’s from) My Mom had this fabric that was white with black spots all over it that kind of looked like a cow. I dyed it purple and made a one-shoulder tube dress and wore it with a sign that had the poem written on it because no one had any idea that I was dressed as a purple cow.

My first project was a black velvet skirt and went totally wrong. It was a difficult fabric to start with. I still have the skirt and plan to do some small changes to make it wearable.

My first sewing project was a copy of a toy I’d had since I was a baby, a little gingerbread man doll. I used (clean) shop rags for fabric and it actually came out pretty well. I did learn what seam allowances were for the hard way, though. (:

A messenger bag for my little sister. I used an old pair of jeans for the flap and some tan leather my dad had leftover from upholstering a car. I even appliqued a felt cat on the flap.
