This week’s how-to video from SINGER® and The Martha Stewart Show brings you one of our favorite celebrity sewers, Heather Ross. Martha and Heather take you step-by-step through making an adorable smocked dress perfect for summer days lounging by the pool. This super simple project is great for both children and adults, and Heather shows you a few cool tips (like using elastic wrapped thread for your smocking) that make this a fun and easy garment you can whip up in a weekend!

My favorite weekend project now that it’s a new year involves finishing already-started projects! Also, I have the Weekend Sewing book and the Yard Sale Wrap skirt is on my list.

One of my favorite weekend projects practicing new patterns and techniques in small-scale clothes for a 50’s “bride” doll who lost her clothes before she came to me. I can try interesting pattern changes and embellishments before investing in the time and materials in garments for people.

My favorite weekend projects are finding little treasures at the fabric store. I go through the scraps bins or the sale fabrics and find some pretty great stuff!

I like to take a pretty complicated shirt/skirt pattern that I know will take me all weekend and just focus on that for the whole two days. It’s a good way to set aside the right amount of time for something like that. That way I know that no matter what snags I run into, I’ve got a chunk of time to figure it out.

My favorite weekend projects is to find new stuff to make. I’m still in the beginner-level, so creating new things, from patterns I’ve bought or patterns I’ve made myself, is very fun to me.
