Did you know that each year over 500 billion plastic bags are thrown away by consumers worldwide? And that it can take up to 1,000 years for those plastic bags to biodegrade? Kristin St. Clair, one of the crafty minds at The Martha Stewart Show, came up with a great way to replace those troublesome plastic options and get a new life out of some old tee shirts hanging around your closet.

Check out how Kristin and Martha use a couple of heavy-weight cotton shirts and a SINGER® Confidence™ sewing machine to make cute (and reusable!) tote bags perfect for everything from carting groceries to shopping with friends. Check out our own version of the reusable tote with the Charlie Bag free pattern download!

Now that you’ve watched Martha work her magic, let us know what your favorite upcycling project is for a chance to win a SINGER® 7467S Confidence Stylist! You have until 9AM EST on Monday, January 31st to get those comments in and our winners will be announced on February 1st! Stay tuned for next week’s video and more awesome prizes from SINGER®!

I love this simple project! I have so many t-shirts I can use for this. I just have to control myself and not cut them ALL up! I love that she uses a bowl as her circle template, so do I!

I usually reuse the fabric from old trousers to make little messenger bags, and I love to transform old shirts into pillows.

I think I may take my girls(16 & 13) thrifting to find some cool larger t’s and teach them to make these. I am always looking for new things to teach them. I just found a tutorial on how to make yarn from old t-shirts also I’m so excited to try both of these projects!

I love to use old blue jeans to make bags and purses. The denim is still very sturdy and makes a nice heavy weight bag.

This is the quickest and most awesome idea I have ever seen for a re-usable shopping bag! If I can just win that sewing machine or the iron, I will be able to get my teenaged son to make some of these to sell for his own pocket money…. hmmmmm…..

Mostly I like to fix things so I don’t need to toss them, like mending my cycling jacket. These things are too expensive to buy new ones all the time after taking a spill.

Definitely re-purposing old clothes! Either from my closet or the thrift store, I love taking a too big, unflatering or dated item and making it awesome again.

I have not purchased brand new clothing in years. I usually find things that i like second hand and just change it to my preference. I have a section of my fabric closet reserved for random articles that I need to reconstruct.

I love making sweater sleeves and wrist warmers from old sweaters! And since I’m so tall I use men’s shirt cuffs around the legs of my jeans that are too short! It makes them instantly cute and classy

I purchase men’s ties from St. Joes Bargin Barn (a perpetual garage sale run by retired volunteers that benefits St. Joe’s orfanage in our neighborhood) and turn them into necklaces. They have a bin where every tie is $.50. It feels like such a win-win-win. I get inexpensive materials, that are already in the basic shape I need the (minimal sewing required!), we keep things out of landfill, and best of all: it benefits kids in need!
