Many fabrics have a so-called pattern direction. This means that a pattern/print dictates a certain direction for the fabric. When cutting it is therefore important to note that the individual pieces are placed on the fabric so that the finished part does not look wonky, but that it reproduces the pattern nice straight. Few beginner sewing enthusiasts dare to look at patterned fabrics, but with these sewing tips nothing stands in the way of your first patterned garment!

In this above example, it is easy to see that the flower stalks are pointing up the sides of the dress, while pointing downwards in the middle. Something has not worked out here in the pattern cutting…

… Here, however, all flower stalks show down. For all fabrics with pattern direction, the cut pieces must be placed on the fabric so that the lower edges point in the same direction. Only then will the pattern on the garment come into its own.

For checked, cross-striped or cross-stitched fabrics, it is important that the pattern conforms to the longitudinal seams. For this purpose, the cut pieces must be placed on the fabric so that the lower edges are on the same pattern strip.

    That’s exactly why I recently dismantled an entire garment I had purchased. Loved the fabric, but nothing lined up. Took ages to take the whole thing apart but at least now it’s right!
