Is the waistband too tight? Does the fabric stretch? You might need more fullness in the front. Learn how to quickly and easily adjust your pattern by reading on…

Dresses

Step 1:
Draw a horizontal adjustment line from centre front to side seam, approx. 10 cm (4") below waist. Then draw a vertical line from this line to lower edge (distance from center front = 1/10 hip measurement minus 1 cm / 3/8").

Step 2:
Cut the pattern piece along the horizontal line, ending close to the side seam, and along the vertical line, ending close to the horizontal cut. Add the needed extra length, from the center front to the vertical cut. Spread the edges of the vertical cut apart. Measure the width of the resulting dart and subtract this width from the side seam edge.

Skirts

Step 1:
Here also draw a horizontal adjustment line from centre front to side seam, approx. 10 cm (4") below waist. Then draw a vertical line from this line to upper edge (distance from center front = 1/10 hip measurement minus 1 cm / 3/8").

Step 2:
Add the extra length as described for the dress and coat. Spread the edges of the vertical cut apart, thereby creating a second dart. Draw this dart approx. 2–3 cm (3/4"–1 1/4") shorter than the first dart.

Other Information:
If you have a fully tummy, you will need a little extra length in front, to keep the hem even and to prevent the waistband from being too tight or sitting at the wrong place. To determine how much extra length is needed, first tie a firm tape around your waist. Measure from the tape to the floor at the centre front and at the side. It’s best to have someone help you do this. Subtract 1 cm from the side length. The remaining difference between the two lengths can then be adjusted on the pattern.
