BurdaStyle is incredibly excited to announce a partnership with Rowenta and Project Runway! On the first episode of this season’s Project Runway, contestants were asked to take an item of clothing from another designer’s wardrobe and refashion it into a brand new garment. We know our BurdaStyle members are just as creative and we’ve decided to give you the chance to show your stuff in our very own Project Runway competition.
So here’s the deal: we want you to take an existing garment from your closet and turn it into something new! Sounds simple enough, but we’re looking for a little bit more than putting new buttons on a jacket. We want you to really dig in and repurpose those old pieces into new functional, wearable garments while still utilizing as much of the original as possible. Don’t forget, ironing gives a more professional look when creating garments so be sure to flatten those seams and smooth out those wrinkles. We all know that Rowenta irons and garment steamers are the tools of choice among many of the fashion industry’s leading creators, so get to work for your chance to win your own!
Guidelines:
1. Be sure to email your full name, username, high quality photos and a link to your project on BurdaStyle to submissions[at]burdastyle[dot]com. You must also send us a short paragraph (under 300 characters including spaces!) explaining what you did and how you used an iron in your project.
2. Take well-lit, high quality images of your garment both before and after, front and back. You must have both images to be considered.
3. All entries must be received by 11:59pm (EST) on September 30, 2010. You have 2 weeks to create and submit your upcycled garment – We know this doesn’t seem like a whole lot of time but hey, the Project Runway contestants only got 4 hours!
4. You can enter more than one garment if you’d like but remember, quality over quantity.
5. This contest is open to US residents 16 and up. For full contest rules please click here
Prizes:
One grand prize winner will receive: An amazing prize package from Rowenta including the DG5030 Pressure Iron and Steamer as well as the IS9100 Precision Valet garment steamer, the Brother 5234 Project Runway Serger, 5 patterns and 5 trimmings from Simplicity’s Project Runway Collection from Simplicity Creative Group. Our 2nd place runner-up will receive US $200 cash prize, and 3rd place will receive US $100 cash prize!
You have shown us over and over again how insanely creative you can be, now is the time to really let it shine. Would that jacket work as a skirt? Can you make that dress into a pair of shorts? We’re looking for you guys to really let your imaginations run wild with this one. And make sure to check out the rest of this season of Project Runway for extra inspiration! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Rowenta is international, BurdaStyle is international, Project Runway yes, it’s international. Competition is not. Strange and unfair. I understand that it can be quite complicated to organise but now so many people are dissatisfied that it’s for sure not good because of marketing reasons.

I am a member of burdastyle but the contest is only open to residence of the US and I live in Australia. I have some great design creations made from my husbands old jeans and ties that I would love to enter, any chance that there are any exceptions to the rule.

The only thing I am still confused about as I read through the comments and answers is: The rules say to take an existing garment and turn into something new". To me that says use ONE garment to make something new. Several people asked if they can use several garments to make a new one and you said yes. So what are the rules about what you can use? Please advise! Thank you, and look forward to getting started as soon as the rules are clarified more.

How about you Ruthie, since Racheal won’t respond? I checked with the state of Arizonas Attorney General, and the AZ state law library, read your rules to them..they said there is NOT any reason for Arizona to be excluded from this competition….care to be more specific as to the reasons we are excluded? Is there something in the rules you guys are hiding from everyone? It isn’t a lottery, gambling, raffle…right? You don’t have to buy anything to participate…right? That is our law in a basket. Or is Burda not being 100% upfront about how the contest is judged? Do you throw everyones pic in a basket and draw for the winner? . I think that you and Racheals lack of response and skirting the issue is very unproffessional and leads me to beleive that I am right..there is no reason to exclude us, unless Burda is boycotting our state for our immigration stand against ilegal immigrants. Especially since your rules state you must be a LEGAL resident of the US, and other states have much stricter laws than we do, like Florida, yet they can participate?? What do I have to do to get a response from you guys..call the news stations??? sheesh

While I am not entering I do want to say that there is no iron like a Rowenta Steam Generation. Ironing is a breeze and wonderful when I have to press my seams and allowances.

Hey some folks are residents of the US state of Arizona, I’m sure they’re pretty bummed about not being able to enter the contest either due to their state laws.

there is NOT a law restricting us, I checked with the AZ Attorney general and the State Law library..yet Burda, and Racheal refuse to comment about excluding AZ. I think they are just boycotting us, as someone else suggested. They lose me as a customer

rachelnyc…why do you refuse to answer my post?? An answer would be appreciated.

One more entry question! The more detailed rules seems to imply that the actual garment is needed to be sent in to be juried. Do we need to send the garment in? or can we just enter electronically with great pictures. Im so excited to enter! Great contest!!!

What an awesome challenge! Sad (but not surprised!) that I can’t enter the competition from Australia, but will certainly be participating with some fab re-dos I am currently working on. Happy to take the challenge with or without the prize… look for mine in the projects…

@Ruthie Burda…do you care to respond to my previous post, or at least your legal department as to why you EXCLUDE only AZ in this contest? I spoke to the attorney general and the AZ state law library, and they say there is no reason why you should be excluding residents of our state. There is no law as stated before., 5 posts ago. Many of us in AZ our waiting for the “reason”, and the lack of response after verification with Terry Giddards office is very fishey. Are you guys boycotting our state? A response would be appreciated.
