It’s cold here in New York city. No, that’s an understatement, it’s freezing: with the windchill & snow & ice it can be dreadful. Must dress warmly. There are many chic coats out there that look wonderful but leave you shivering in your boots. I have numerous pretty vintage woolen coats & capes, the kind that are sharply tailored and smartly cut from English houndstooth and Irish wovens, but cannot block the wind if their imaginary little lives depended on it. What is a gal to do to stay warm?
I’ve been doing some research and I am still not thrilled with my discoveries. I am the kind of girl who likes to wear my own designs or vintage pieces that are diamonds in the rough hard to come by special gems. I don’t wear many labels or big-name brands, though it seems unanimous from everyone (at least in America), who has ever worn a North Face parka, to agree that it is indeed the warmest coat they’ve ever worn. Brookstone makes a heated fleece coat, which I am seriously considering, as I can wear it under one of my “chic but unrealistic” winter coats and get 5-hours of heat. I am looking for a singular coat, that is warm enough to not have to wear multiple layers underneath which prevent one from moving properly.
I am ready to forfeit fashion for warmth & I need your help: What do you all wear in freezing temperatures?

As usual, another great post. I had no idea Brookstone carried a heated fleece! Would be nice for those extra cold days in the city! Get Rid of Acne Overnight

I have a beige babyphat down filled and faux fur lined coat, it’s warm and stylish. I got it on sale for 40% off too:)

it is freezing in the netherlands too. To dangerous to leave the house and drive or walk. But we can’t stay in the house. I wear 2 tights under my skirt, lether boots (with high heels sometimes) A warm wool and chic sweater and a chic wool coat. And yes it is still cold!
But if you make your own coat you could make the lining of fleece. I know i will do that for my new coat!

I wear a second hand fur coat and hat, shearling lined duck boots with 2 layers of wool socks and merino wool long johns under my pants! If you feel like it’s too bold or gaudy to wear a huge fur coat, you might want to look for a tweed coat lined with fur on the inside. It’s really the warmest thing. Today I found myself almost too hot, while a couple of girls walking by me on the street were shrieking about how cold it was. And so far no one has cussed at me or thrown red paint on my coat!

Layer! I was just in the City a week or so ago, and it was cold. I wore a nice thick sweater under a wool coat, along with a scarf, hat, and gloves, and I was in good shape. I find laying is nice, not only as a fashion statement (I love layers) but they do help trap in the heat, and you can remove layers as needed, if the temperature gets a little warmer.

I got an amazing coat last christmas; it’s keeping me really really warm, some sort of black jeans outside and stuffed with SOMETHING xD it’s brilliant, really cosy and you don’t even really need to put on a sweater underneath it. down jackets are also lovely but don’T really look all that nice xD

I ve got to say keeping warm in colorado is tuff, how ever i love it! and i love wearing my skirts in the winter…esp. if it is -30 (everyday!) i can layer and layer and know one ever knows! i have leggins, sweat pants, and a slip (in some cases) to wear under my long skirts. my favorite one is a grey wool, really flowy, warm long skirt wich also hides the top of my snow boots! As for my top part of my body i layer a longsleeve under a sweater, then wear my water/wind, (kinda insulated) bonfire jacket, then a hat and gloves and im ready to start my car! lol To ski, then all i have to do is remove the skirt, and apply goggles!

I know it is very cold here in Michigan right now. Although I can’t wear it all the time, because it’s pretty broke in, I love to wear my fake sherpa-lined courderoy jacket by Dollhouse. Love my thermals and a shawl size scarve for adding to any coat is the rule. And of course furry-lined boots.

Well since I know live in Phoenix AZ its nice in the day 50 or 60 and about 30-40 at night. SInce its warm in the day and cool at night I am a layering, tights, leggings, leather jacket kind of girl. When I lived in Colorado in the snow I almost always wore knee high boots with tights under my pants with a tank-long sleeve-cardigan-scarf-snowboarding jacket- earmuffs/beanie-gloves. That usually kept me warm and for that area I felt pretty fashionable. :)

I used a project runway simplicity pattern and made a fun wool coat with a high collar to avoid nasty wind chills. It’s knee length now but when the cold sods off I’ll reopen the lining and cut off the bottom to make it a nice jacket for the spring :)

I just left NYC for the summer in South America, but before I left I was literally living in 2 pairs of sock and woolen tights under my skinny jeans, chunky frye boots, and turtlenecks layered with a merino sweater, then a long lambswool cardigan, and finally my super duper life saving light weight sort of cute insulating bubble jacket from UNIQLO! I think winters are about surviving to seen next seasons fashion, not living in it unless you celebrate winter near the equatorial line!!
Good Luck!

ps: on the plus side winter is a chance to go crazy with hats and scarves!!

Uniqlo is a great place for winter wear. Stylish and usually pretty warm. What is more important to me is getting my money’s worth. I have a white wool trench that I bought there over 2 years ago. Its still keeping me toasty.

Living in Tasmania, and subsequently very close to Antartic, I tend to make sure my underwear is ticketyboo (multiple merino fine layers) and I dont have any qualms about lining a beautifully tailored coat with a fine fleece layer.

coat? what’s a coat? it’s 72 degrees and sunny in Phoenix right now ;) ha ha. Although it isn’t that cold here I’ve been wearing a shin length, hand made, hand dyed purple coat with wrap around “scarf” collar and wood buttons from Nepal that I got from a shop in San Francisco. It gets lots of compliments and is very heavy. I wear it with a stripe-horned monster hat I made.

I totally understand,
I live in New York too and I feel all my pretty is locked up for the winter. This summer I made a coat from a Built By Wendy pattern I altered (I added a shawl collar) For extra warmth I lined it with a thinner wool. The result was great but the coat is kind of heavy.

The dream would be a Rick Owens shearling coat. I thought i would get away with not having to buy a new coat after my old Triple 5 should coat have out after 5 years but I was wrong. Heres what my girlfriend bought, she swears by this thing, she says it perfect to wear this under the “cute coat”http://www.campsaver.com/itemmatrix.asp?GroupCode=mar0159&MatrixType=1
I also bought myself 200$ worth of Cashmere yarn, im hoping to knit an Aran Fishermans cardigan by next winter ( I dont know how to knit)

Welll….. I live in Buffalo NY where it is currently about 14 degrees, and I am going to buy a peacoat from the Army-Navy store. SOOOO warm!!! I’m also knitting ribbed cuffs to sew onto it to keep the wind out. :)

I live in the north of Sweden and it is not unusual that the temperature drops below -20 degrees during the winter. In november I bought a Gloverall duffel and with a fleece jacket underneath it keeps me warm, eventhough not as warm as a North Face or Canada Goose would’ve. But since I’m not very fond of the look of such coats and can only afford to buy one wintercoat this year I chose the duffle. I’m thinking of sewing a sweater/jacket to wear underneath for the really cold days, maybe in some windproof fabric since the gloverall don’t provide a complete protection against the cold winds.

When it’s cold enough… always my puffy and very unstylish down-jacket (to just below the bum). I agree with oonabaloona, it’s like wearing your down-duvet out of the house (though I’m sad to say my duvet is not as fluffy as my jacket). When it’s only a few degrees below 0 (ie the freezing point for all F-accustomed) I wear a warm wool-jacket by Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair or a wool coat by Whyred if I wear a dress underneath. Both are Swedish brands so their wintercoats are well lined and warm… but I still always wear a warm wool cardigan underneath. And always leather winterboots with extra (warm) soles in them. We’re expecting -25C on saturday here in Stockholm, that’s rare!

When it’s freezing, I wear comfy thick knitwear, above the knee coats, thick, thick tights or leggings, boots, gloves, hats and lots lots of layers!
