There are two kinds of people in this world, those who only watch E!‘s red carpet coverage before the Oscar’s with no intention of actually watching the Oscars and those who commit to the 458453 hour long show. Last night, thankfully being closer to the west coast than the east coast, I sat through the entire thing. It was filled some sweet and funny moments, as well as drama, which the whole world is now aware of.

As far as the fashion goes, it didn’t wow me as much as I was hoping it would. I think I was actually more impressed with the Golden Globes red carpet. As I was looking over all my best dressed picks i noticed a prominant theme, neutrals, black and velvet. All with the exception of Ruth Negga in a bold red gown that got somewhat lost in the red carpet.

The BurdaStyle girls are in agreement that our favorites of the night were Brie Larson, Halie Steinfeld and Busy Philipps. Brie Larson looked so unbelievably stunning in her black velvet Oscar de la Renta gown paired with soft curls and a bold red lip. The guys also looked especially dapper last night, the blue suits won me over on Chris Evans and Riz Ahmed.

See the rest of our picks from the Oscars red carpet last night.

Viola Davis’ dress was the best looking and on-trend (cold shoulder or off-shoulder) one of the women’s attire. Some of the nominees looked washed out in their pale choices. Daring to expose tons of skins. Love Priyanka Chopra’s textured dress and skirt but that top line of the bodice-needs curving.

Saw many men wearing blue jackets or suits-appreciate the move away from tuxedo black.

Kirsten Dunst’s Dior was stunning, a vintage classic updated really well.

I was not a huge fan of the red carpet – the Harpers Baazar party fashions were much nicer. But Taraji P Henderson’s dress was just lovely elegant simplicity for me. Even though it’s not pictured here I loved the way Scarlett Johanson’s dress looked like it was floating when she came on stage to present. The red carpet pictures didn’t do it justice. And I thought Dakota Johnson’s red carpet look was unflattering and dowdy but her after party dress was lovely.

I completely agree! I loved the fashion on the Vanity Fair red carpet, overall probably better than the Oscars red carpet. Also, I couldn’t get onboard with Dakota Johnson’s look either but her after party dress was great .

Agreed – that dress is sublime. Jessica Biel too. And Halle Berry’s dress is also so graceful and balanced.
