The holidays are not quite over yet! There is still New Year’s to look forward to. A new year, a new style, a new resolution. I am a big fan of New Year’s Eve as it is a time to play dress up, drink champagne, and take pictures with all your friends. A huge part of New Year’s though is simply asking yourself “What do I wear?” and if your me (or any other sewer) you’ll say “What do I make?”. Check out which pattern I plan on making (I still have a few days!), and some other great dress suggestions.

This year I decided to make my New Year’s Eve dress is a stretch crushed velvet, and I got some in a lovely forest green (it will look great with my red hair). I purchased my fabric first and then browsed our dress library.

I knew I wanted a pattern with long sleeves that was also compatible with stretch fabrics, so I decided to make our Stretch Dress. I also just love the asymmetrical gathering, and I think it will look fabulous in my velvet fabric.

Both 3.1 Phillip Lim (left) and Diane Von Furstenberg (right) sent velvet looks down the runway for their fall 2013 collections. Velvet looks so rich in these jewel tones, and not to mention it is a very winter appropriate fabric!

Still in a pickle, and not sure what to make? Here are some of my favorite dresses for NYE broken down into themes. Whether your a vintage vixen, modern belle, or wanting something fresh you’ll find something to make or buy with direction.

from right to left; Illustion Neckline Dress, Wrap Style Dress, Mod Sheath, Designer Cowl, Pleated V Neck Dress, Fitted Sheath

What style do you like to embrace on New Year’s Eve? I like always like to dress warm and classy with a bit of edge to kick off the new year!

I really like this post… While walking through the fabric shop in town I came across the velvet fabric section… But to me velvet still has this “old” feeling to it…. But now that I see that it’s been on the runway lately I may just give it a try… they had a really beautiful blue one… But I don’t think I’ll make in time for new year’s though… :(
