One of may favorite things to do is look through past fashions and see how they influence today’s looks. Living in New York City you can see people wearing vintage pieces and styles from almost every decade from the past century. Living here also provides the opportunity to go visit the vast collections around the city. Many cities have these collections and I highly recommend going to visit them if for no other reason than to be inspired. Many of these collections are available online as well, it’s the perfect way to see details, go through the centuries and spend an afternoon.
Check out the Met’s Costume Institute (let alone their Gala)
The Brooklyn Museum also has an amazing collection up through August

I love Charles James’ work. Specially his work during the 50’s. I did a project on him for school and I fell in love with his designs. The butterfly dress (above top left), “4 clover dress” and the “quilted down jacket” are my favorites.

Failing the ability to get to see these wonderful museum shows, just visiting New York is inspiring, too. I was reminded of this during our family’s recent visit there. Even my favorite city, San Francisco, doesn’t hold a candle, fashion-wise, to New York!

does anybody know a link to the grecian dress in the bottom left? I’d love to get some more pictures on that one.

Do you know who the yellow dress pictured top right is designed by? It’s stunning. I’ve been meaning to go to see Costume Institute’s American Woman Fashion Exhibit at the MET— being a New Yorker sometimes I forget to take advantage of the wonderful exhibits all around us. Thanks for the reminder!
