Not to be critical but not one of the people from my area are active members of Burda Style. I applaud them for stepping up, but someone who just joined the site on the 23th of April being a group leader? I wish you would have put a little more fore thought into who you allowed to take these positions. I submitted but had some hesitation in what you expected, had you said you’d take anyone, I was up to the job, but I was told you had several people already from my area and no one else was needed. Not one of these people have a profile, any creations, posted on the forum, and one doesn’t even have a picture. How am I to know if our sewing type are compatible? If someone wants to be a leader they should at least have a profile.

Maybe this person just found the site. Maybe they are an active teacher.

I dont write much on this site and read it occasionally because I am busy teaching others to sew and quilt. So I have samples to make and lessons to prepare. If I get on my computer I get involved in conversation that I dont get any work done. LOL
I’m sorry you missed out. :-(

    Hi Caseysgal,

Sorry about that! it’s all fixed now.

@ Missfshn: we know that there are many different levels of involvement on our site and for this reason we are not going to turn anyone away who wants to take the initiative and lead a sewing group. As for the issue of compatibility, we absolutely encourage all group leaders to create an interesting profile, but this is not a requirement. If you are concerned about compatibility i suggest messaging the BSC leader, or going to the first meeting to try it out. And finally, we would love it if you lead a group in your area, if you would like I can add it to the list immediately.

I totally agree with mlssfshn! The leader of the Seattle sewing club has been a member for a little over a month and they have’nt even made any creations. How are they a good leader?

how does one join a club thats already formed? all i see above is the name of the group leader, and when i click on it i get sent to their burdastyle profile, not a group profile. maybe im an idiot but im confused!

    Hi kquade,

We don’t have group profiles. Just send a message to the group leader – they will get in touch with you then!

    Have fun!

@kendal and @mlssfshn – Some people are not online people, they don’t create profiles or upload content, but they are still great in getting people together and enabling social sewing, something we promote on- and now offline. We trust that people who are volunteering will do a good job. If you feel they are not being responsible leaders, tell them, tell us and we can solve this!

If there are two names listed for a city, does that mean there are two different groups in that city or one group with two leaders?

Hello klf! Here is your answer, “There are two different groups, each one has a leader. They might talk to each other and decide to make it one, but maybe they are in different areas and it is more convenient for some to attend one over the other.”

hello all… super stoked to hear about this. it’d be rad if someone wanted to start a club up in campbell river b.c …… I’d start one but I’m kinda flakey (he he) but would love to join up in one. I’m just not that responsible :D was this the right spot to pose this question? I’m a newb to all this message board stuff. and for the record… i rarely post anything. have no creations or anything else in my profile. ;) but i love your site and have learnt soooo much on here. I’m just not computer literate. or really sewing literate either haha

Hello! I had offered to lead one in Wellington (Hutt Valley), NZ, but don’t see it on the list. Was it just no-one else was interested in my area? It’s about an 8 hour drive to either of the other two in NZ!

    Hello,
I just wanted to check if you are sure that Nichola P. (aka nikkishell) is really doing the sewing club in Sydney – her location profile says she is in Melbourne…
    Cheers, Steffi

    Hiya Mlssfshn,

.. and anyone who’s looked at my profile and thought, “yeah, but who the heck IS she?”, lol..! You’re right, before throwing my hat in the ring I should have filled out my profile properly [smacks forehead with palm of hand]!
I have not used Burdastyle a great deal, other than for the (once free) patterns and as an accompaniment to the Burda pattern magazines I buy.
When I’ve had sewing problems or questions, I’ve tended to trawl through my books, ask a sewing friend for a second opinion, or posted on forums at Threads magazine/Handbag.com.
Becoming an active member of an online community, for such a hands-on activity, takes more planning than the above, and my energy levels aren’t great due to health stuff (so what I do have, I use making things :D ).
I gave alot of information to Burda about my past experience (C+G courses in Fashion and Lingerie, drafting block/sloper patterns, having creating days with ex-sewing group students to alter/fit garments etc), but completely forgot about my online presence!
I am in the process of rectifying this (hopefully by the weekend), as soon as I can track down photographs of things I’ve made, and tickled my technology to talk to each other :)

What is involved in a sewing group? What exactly goes on? Id love to be a part of the NYC ones but itd be nice to know what to expect if I show up to a group. btw, even though i dont know much about it, its still a great idea.

Any chance the Dallas group is going to get here? It’s been coming soon for a while. Where it would be is another question as Dallas is a big place with a lot of suburbs. You can easily spend 45 minutes to more than an hour driving around here to get someplace ‘local’.

    happycatuk,

Thanks for your positive comments! I’m not a very good pattern drafter but I can sew well and am looking for others from whom I can glean information and experience :) I’ve got room in my home and would love other central Kansas-ites to show me a thing or two …. or three.

I contacted the Sydney, Australia person twice in the last 2 weeks and haven’t heard anything back from her… When I checked the list now she wasn’t even on it any longer. Very disappointing!!! It is hard to believe that there are no people who would want to lead/ join a sewing club in Sydney…

I’m another one that’s really bad at filling in profiles. While I’m new on this name, I have been a member for a while, I just changed it to reflect my blog where I am a little more personable then I am on here.

I did fill it out, and I appreciate the comments that made the light bulb go on that it needed to be done.

As to the meetings, I have contacted several places that we can meet in various locations in the area (Lawrenceburg, Muscle Shoals, Florence, St. Joe and Loretto) so everyone can have a meeting that will fit in with their distance depending on where the members are coming from, and times for everyone once we get some members so I can finalize it for everyone!

I live in Miami and I submitted my name to be a leader, but did not get it. I honestly do not care or am upset i did not get chosen, however, i have tried to contact the Member who is the Miami sewing club leader and I never got a response. Also, he profile says she lives in Port St. Lucie? I would like to get in touch with ppl in Miami who are active in a sewing club
