A few weeks ago my mother gave me a wool cardigan from H&M that has little brass beads scatteredly sewn over the shoulders (a lookbook.nu model models it above left). I instantly fell in love and have been kind of obsessed with the thought of beading and embellishing something common, vintage or used…
I found more examples of beaded cardigans, like the black wool & tulle cardigan top right by By Malene Birger. It has black pearls and pailettes sewn intricately onto it. The gold & black sequin button-up cardigan is by Oscar de la Renta, it’s made up of larger and smaller metallic sequins and pailettes. Cinthia Vincent designed the taupe-colored cardigan that is dripping in more metallic sequins, and to the right of that, another beautiful example by By Malene Birger in creme wool with like-colored sequin pailettes. Even the First Lady adorns herself in beaded cardis!
What do you think of this retro-vintage-current look? I would suggest going to a thrift store, finding a great cardigan, and going for it! Beading requires a bit of patience, but what a nice Fall project to do while sitting cozy at home.

Yard sales are a great place to find inexpensive beads (i.e. old jewelry) that are just enough to dazzle a pair of gloves, a hat or a handbag.

Oh yes.. I’m dying to make that dress that Beyonce wears in her Upgrade U video. The gold sequined one, where she is dancing with the guys. A tutorial on how to sew them on would be fantastic! That sounds like a great project idea to sew them on cardigans. Nice! My creative juices are flowing….

we sell these at the store i work at; we’re all in love with them! they’re a great way to dress up a drab old sweater, and i recommend to those who can sew, do it! yours will turn out much better than the store bought ones, since you get to pay such close attention to securing each bead, and doing it up exactly how fancy you want.
also great on eveningwear: sequins and beads absolutely sparkle under mood lighting.

Yes— to make it your own, embellish it with your own personality and give something a little lift.
