We hope you’re ready to start sewing for the holidays, if you haven’t already. As you’re making gifts for friends, teachers, neighbors or co-workers, we’re here to help! Need a great pattern that you can use several different ways, for men, women or children? Look to our reusable grocery bag pattern which is so versatile. Swap the fabric print to suit the recipient. Change the fabric type to make it more or less durable: Use canvas to hold library books, laminated cotton to corral produce, terry to carry gym wear. We hope you’re also sewing for yourself this season. After all, you need something new to wear for holiday photos and parties.

Each Wednesday from now until December 14, we’ll see what our expert editors are sewing, and doing, for the holidays to give you some more ideas and inspiration. This week, we’re talking to Meg Healy, BurdaStyle editor, to see what she’s up to for the holidays.

Q: Will you be traveling over the holidays or staying home?

A: A little bit of both! This year has been crazy busy for me in terms of travelling, as I went to Ireland/Portugal/England in the summer and just recently got back from Italy. I went on those trips in addition to attending several sewing expos on the east coast and many trips to Colorado to film new courses/sew-alongs at F+W studios for BurdaStyle Academy. Whew, that was a lot of travelling, so I’m glad to be staying quite local during the holidays. We are spending Christmas at home and then hopping a quick train to Montreal to ring in the new year, and I’m going to need to make a fabulous new dress for that!

Q: How soon do you start sewing for the holidays?

A: I’m actually a quite last minute person, but I think I work best under pressure and I’m a speedy fast sewer! So I probably won’t start sewing holiday gifts and outfits until the second or so week of December.

Q: What parties or special events will you attend this season? Is there anything special you plan to make to wear?

A: Nothing to special this year, just the usual holiday get-togethers with friends and I plan on being COMFORTABLE! That is why I’m planning on wearing the Fashion Sweatshirt (below) that I up-cycled recently. It has all the glam of the holiday season and the warmth to make me feel cozy and comfortable while gathering with friends.

Q: Is there a go-to gift you like to make each year for friends?

A: I love making my friends gifts for the season, a couple of years I was really into making custom embroidered tea towels and last year I sewed up a bunch of these DIY Slippers! pictured below using this pattern. This year i’m going to customize them further and add charms and monograms that match the friend I’m giving them to. My two dearest friends are crazy cat ladies, so I’m going to be embroidering these cat designs onto them.

Q: What’s the most memorable thing you’ve made for past holidays?

A: Last year I made a fur throw for my dad and he tells me it was his favorite gift especially since my mother keeps their house so cold, haha. I’m always stuck on what to get my dad for the holidays, and I knew if I made him any clothing item he wouldn’t wear it because he is so picky. To make it extra special and custom, I quilted on a large H for our family name and also made a matching pillow. Throughout the year he is always cuddled under this throw in his man cave and I’m glad that I was able to make it for him. See how I made this throw here!

Q: What do you recommend as a good gift for kids?

A: I’m probably the worst person to ask this since currently I have no children in my life right now, but speaking from what I remember loving received as a child it was always dolls! Clothes you can grow out of, but a little dolly is always by your side. I love this doll pattern from the 10/2017 issue, and best of all it can be hand made! Also if you have a friend who just had a little one, this diaper bag would be an awesome thing to make and give.

Q: What do you recommend as a good gift for a man? Dad? Boyfriend? Etc?

A: This year I’m making ties for all the men in my life! It is easy to make and you can customize it to fit your man’s style and personality. My guy has a quirky sensibility (I once sewed him a donut printed shirt), so I’m going to make him some crazy printed ones, and then my brother a sophisticated one with a sleeker silhouette.

Q: Are there any special dishes you’re excited to eat for the holidays?

A:Is it bad to say I’m looking most forward to drinking rum and eggnog? Haha.

Q: What activities are you most looking forward to this holiday season?

A: Last year for Christmas my mother in law gave me ice skates, so I’m very excited to skate a lot more this season. I love dressing up in all my cozy gear with hot cocoa in my thermos to bring to the rink and Toronto has many outdoor skating rinks that are fabulous and scenic. We also love winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, so I always look forward to the holiday snow to get back on the slopes.

Q: Are there any new fashion or décor trends you’re planning to incorporate into your holiday sewing this year?

A: More so a new fashion trend than décor and I’m dying to sew this new trendy look seen below from the 09/2017 issue of BurdaStyle Magazine. I love this entire look, and it is simply a sewn slip over a blouse buttoned up. I just need the boots and a cool choker to wear with my blouse. This look screams on-trend to me while still being casually dressy and comfortable. Comfort is really all i’m about for the holiday season.

Q: What do you hope to receive this holiday from family and friends?

A: I would really love a dress form, it is the one thing I’m missing in my sewing studio.
