What inspires me is the way it makes you feel when you put on a freshly sewn garment and some one compliments you and says “you made that! WOW! REALLY”

Quilters in the past made such beautiful things out of so little. I’m also inspired by the the fabulous colors in the fabrics people design.

Seeing beautiful clothes, trying them on, and finding out that they just don’t fit right or just need a little more edge. Also, to express and present myself in the most comfortable way possible.

Manhattan. I live in the East Village, and I am constantly being challenged and surprised. But no matter what part of the city I venture to; the Upper East Side, the Seaport, Harlem… I always see buildings, street art, street fashion, people, etc. that inspire me!

Looking at historic textiles from different cultures and traditions around the world always gets me excited to consider how these things might be incorporated into the things I want to make and wear!

    Frustration and grief.

Frustration that so little at the store fits me properly – none of it fits without alterations. But, when I make my own stuff and someone asks where I got it, I get to say, “I made this!”

And the grief. . . my mom taught me to sew even though, at the time, I didn’t want to learn. I was only 12 or so, but she made me sit down and learn, insisting that it’s a good skill to know. I sewed off and on for years, but didn’t start sewing regularly until after she passed away a few years ago. She left me her immense fabric stash, which I incorporate into a lot of my projects. It helps me feel like part of her is still with me and I take pride in knowing that she passed this down to me.

I’m learning to sew, and aside from another creative outlet, I want clothes that fit better than the clothes in the department store. I’m tired of paying too much for clothes that need to be altered.

Everything! Fabrics and patterns; seeing what other people have created; the creative process of creating a garment; working out tough spots in a pattern; and of course, the joy of wearing something I created that fits my personal style!

I’m inspired by the democratic nature of sewing. It makes fashion more accessible to those who can’t afford expensive clothes. Even if I can’t buy fabric, there’s alway the option of altering something I already have, and making it look great. With sewing, I feel like there are no limits placed on me.

Rome. Every street you walk down, you pass a dozen beautifully dressed, confident, sexy women. They look like they’re ready to take over the world, and that confidence is what I aim for in my sewing. Rocking a fabulous outfit can mean the difference between a “blah” day and an amazing day, and exponentially so when you’ve made it yourself.
