1. Where are you from and/or where do you live?
I’m from Nagano, Japan, and I live in Brooklyn, NY now.
2. What was the 1st thing you made? How did you start sewing?
I’m not sure if this is really the first thing I made, but I think it was a bookmark made of felt and straight stitched. I remember I added some starry bead decoration to it. It my was made in 1st grade home economics class and we exhibited it on the wall of the hallway at school. My mother was quite crafty and she handmad/patch worked all my kindergarten nap time blankets, bags and pouches, so it was a great influence. I ended up joining a patch work club at elementary school!
3. What role does sewing play in your life?
It’s a handy technique/tool to know! I forgot how useful sewing was until I started to freelancing for BurdaStyle (I am a graphic designer here). I used to sew for my art projects in college, but I hadn’t sewn anything until last year. This time I started to really get interested in textile design on fabric.. both looking at them and making them by hand printing then wondering how it’s going to be used. So sewing kind of follows/helps that obsession.. Some of my results are on my Etsy store called Wonder Wonder.
4. What is your favorite and what is your least favorite thing about sewing?
My favorite thing is looking, thinking and making interesting textile designs and wondering how it can be used. As a very beginner sewer, too many things are still way too difficult for me so these are the least fave.
5. If you could make something for anyone who would it be and what would you make?Hmm, I really don’t have someone in mind.
If there is any need from someone, I can try making something they need in the way I can and make them happy : )
6. What are you looking for on our site? What do you think should be improved and what do you really like?
First of all, thanks BurdaStyle for making me realize the possibilities of sewing. As a part of BurdaStyle team for nearly 2 years (!), it’s so hard to think outside of bubble! But I’m looking forward to see more people getting into creative sewing and seeing a fresh new clever cool ideas.
7. What is your motto?
I try to live my life happy, optimistic, modest, creative and open as possible.. This is my basic motto, but I’m always interested in other mottos coming from many different cultures and get inspired. So my motto is always open : )
Check out WonderWonder’s awesome designs and projects. You can even own your own little piece of wonder at her Etsy shop. Also check out what she is inspired by
