1. Where are you from and/or where do you live?
I was born in Brooklyn and still reside there. The best things in my life have all happened here. I met and married my husband here. All of my wonderful children were born here. It’s the best place in the world to live!
2. What was the 1st thing you made? How did you start sewing?
The very first thing I made was a plaid drawstring bag with a shoelace for the drawstring. It was made with the help of my aunt Harriet. My grandmother is an accomplished seamstress, she was my inspiration to start sewing. She has made everything from her children’s daily clothing to exquisite flower girl dresses. I am, in fact, on standing orders to kick her in the backside if she ever agrees to sew something so complicated again! I am the only one of her many grandchildren to inherit her crafty gene. It skipped over her children all together.
3. What role does sewing play in your life?
Though I’ve earned a college degree in a creative field, my current job doesn’t allow for much creativity. I have a lot of hobbies to give myself an outlet for my creativity. Sewing is currently my top hobby. I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment I get when I have completed a beautiful wearable item. But the results of sewing run much deeper than that. Handcrafting things, whether sewn, knit of otherwise, keeps me sane. It’s my stress reliever and therapy ;0)
4. What is your favorite and what is your least favorite thing about sewing?
My favorite thing would be creating more items in my wardrobe that fit the way I want. I, like most women, have fit issues with most store bought clothes. My least favorite thing is spending time on a project that doesn’t work out. As a mom of four, I don’t have tons of leisure time, so I hate to feel like any of it is wasted.
5. If you could make something for anyone who would it be and what would you make?
I would make my husband a Pea Coat. He has been looking for the perfect one since we’ve been together. He just mentioned it the other day when we were watching TV together. He has a hard time finding things that fit, and sewing patterns for a man his size are few and far between.
6. What are you looking for on our site? What do you think should be improved and what do you really like?
Burda Style has been such an inspiration to me! It’s so helpful to see the finished projects on different body types and made from different fabrics. Having so many free patterns available gives me the chance to try projects and customize them to my liking. Sharing info with other more experience users is invaluable. It’s also great to receive feedback from other Burda users on my projects.
7. What is your motto?
I don’t know that I have one. I really wish I could live by “Don’t sweat the small stuff”. I tend to make a mountain out of a molehill at times, but I’m getting better with age!
