[2/24/2013 UPDATE: Voting is closed.] View the top finalists!

[1/28/2013 UPDATE: Submission Deadline Extended to 2/15/2013!] To kick off the new year, we are celebrating the release of our new book with an exciting sewing competition open to the international BurdaStyle community – the BurdaStyle Vintage Modern Sewing Contest!

The grand prize winner will receive a lovely package valued at $800 filled with prizes from B&J Fabrics, Hart’s Fabric, MOO, and Spoonflower.

How to Enter:
Create a fashion sewing creation to showcase your take on giving a vintage look a modern spin. Use one of the following options as your starting point:

Option One: Make a creation using one or more master pattern(s) from the BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern book.

Option Two: Create one or more variation project(s) featured in the BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern book, which are based on the master patterns featured in the book.

Option Three: Create your own variation project using one or more master pattern(s) and/or variation project(s) from the BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern book.

Upload your project with the words “BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern Contest 2013” included in the project title by February 15, 2013 at 11:59 PM EST (new extended deadline). This project must be a new project, never previously posted on BurdaStyle.com. To be eligible, the project must link back to the pattern from which you based the project on. Only projects following these criteria will be considered for this competition. Limited to one entry per participant. However, you can make more than one project from the book and turn it into an outfit and submit as one entry (e.g., a blouse from the book paired with pants from the book).

On February 19, 2013, the BurdaStyle team will select and post 20 finalists in a slideshow gallery, which will be announced on the homepage. BurdaStyle community voting will be open from February 19, 2013 until 5:00 PM EST on February 24, 2013.

Top 20 Selection Criteria:
1. Creativity - In addition to following contest rules, we are also looking for projects that showcase your creativity and how you interpret the “vintage modern” essence of the sewing competition. We encourage you to alter, embellish, and style your garment to your own liking!
2. Craftsmanship - Show off your attention to detail and finishing skills! (This is where detail shots of your project really come in handy!)
3. Presentation - Make sure your individual creation gets the attention it deserves through quality photography and styling.

The Prizes:
Grand Prize – BurdaStyle Community Choice First Place: A $100 USD gift card to Hart’s Fabric, 3 yards of fabric from Spoonflower of the winner’s choosing, a $50 USD gift card to MOO that can be used toward the purchase of 40 postcards or 100 business cards, a fabric assortment from B&J Fabrics (approximately $550 USD in value), and a limited edition BurdaStyle tote bag. Yes, that’s right, the grand prize includes tons of high-quality fabric to add to your stash for creating more sewing projects!

BurdaStyle Community Choice Runner-Up: A $100 USD gift card to MOO that can be used toward the purchase of 80 postcards or 200 business cards and a limited edition BurdaStyle tote bag.

BurdaStyle Favorite: One lucky winner chosen by the BurdaStyle team will receive a travel iron. The BurdaStyle Favorite will be chosen from the 20 finalists in the voting slideshow.

This competition is open to all BurdaStyle members, no matter where you sew! BurdaStyle is such a vibrant, diverse and fun community of creative people – we can hardly wait to see what you guys come up with! Is there any limitation as for how long must someone have been a member of the burdastyle.com community, to be able to participate in the contest? I’ve been following the site for a while already, but I only signed up and made an account today. There also a minimum of projects that one needs to post before having the right to participate in the contest? I’m really excited about the contest theme and I ordered the book on Amazon today. I would really like to enter!

      Hi Elochka,

There is absolutely no restriction on how long you have been a member. All the contest rules can be found above. All you need to do is submit an entry by the deadline within the parameters listed above, basing your project off of one of the patterns featured in the book.

      Good luck!

I never got my question answered about different entry levels to have a fair go for all skill levels and also sizes as it is is now can be a little bit intimidating (didn’t want use discriminatory) to beginners and plus size models. I have already subscribed to the monthly issues of burda style magazine and have loads of vintage patterns saved already such a pity that they wont do even though I and probably many others have spent a lot of money on those.. As much as I’m excited about this competition the more I feel that there’s more and more issues to it as I’m reading the comments.

It won’t hold me back making vintage new but I think the competition isn’t cater for all of us equally enough…:(

Thanks for your feedback, Trudy. The terms of this competition are listed above (one grand prize winner, and one runner-up, plus an iron winner). The focus is on our new book, BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern.

We will definitely consider your and others’ ideas regarding categories for different skill levels for future competitions. We wanted the competition to be as open as possible and not restricted by skill levels or body types, so chose an overall theme: “vintage modern.”

The book provides projects for all levels and entrants are not restricted by 19 projects alone in the book. Entrants can use any of the 5 base patterns to create a project variation, which allows for an array of skill levels.

      Hi milkway,

Yes, the projects must be based on a pattern from the book. Here are the three options:

Option One: Make a creation using one or more master pattern(s) from the BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern book.

Option Two: Create one or more variation project(s) featured in the BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern book, which are based on the master patterns featured in the book.

Option Three: Create your own variation project using one or more master pattern(s) and/or variation project(s) from the BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern book.

      Hi emperorny67,

Participants are limited to one entry each. However, you can combine more than one project in an entry. For instance, you may make a top from the book and style it with pants from the book you made.

I want to enter but since I am a beginner I likely won’t win. I am also on a budget so it doesn’t seem worth it to me to buy the patterns unless I know I really have a chance. Can I design something based on the line drawings?

      Hi Melissa,

In order to enter the contest you must use a pattern from the book. For the Top 20, we are judging mainly on creativity, craftsmanship, and presentation which definitely does not eliminate a beginner from participating. There’s a lot you can showcase via fabric choice, photography, and styling, too, so don’t be discouraged!

    Hello Burdonians,

..and so I have a question. I have no idea how to acquire this book in time. Seriously. I’m in Malaysia. As you said, there’s no purchase necessary. So, having said that , if i produce a garment just by looking at the pictures in the book (via sneek peak or by the pdf graphic) which is available for us to see, and do a variation out of it, will I still be eligible to enter?

      Hi nadewas,

The book came out on December 11, 2012 and is available on many sites. Have you tried sites such as http://www.bookdepository.com to purchase the book? You can also purchase the eBook from sites such as Amazon (then you can get the download code to access the PDF patterns). To enter the contest, you must use a pattern from the book to base your creation off of. Let us know if you have any other questions!

Although I’m quite excited about the competition and is a good excuse to spend some time with sewing I can’t help but wonder why there isn’t at least two different entry level for novice and for the more advanced as many of the members are actually professionals…?

Just for the sake of fairness it could have been considered. :)

      Hi emperorny67,

The book comes in both eBook and hardcover formats. The enter the contest, entrants must use a pattern from BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern. You can either sew a pattern straight on (no changes), make one of the variation projects featured in the book, or use one of the master patterns to create your own variation.
