It’s been about a month since BurdaStyle debuted the Fashion Designer’s Guide, and I thought I’d start by asking what’s changed and what steps have you been taking since we started? I know there is still a lot to go over, but I’m hoping even with the two posts under our belt you got the ball rolling or have some new thoughts about your business.

I was so excited to see the positive response and the number of BurdaStyle members eager to take the next step and get their business ideas off the ground. Over the next few articles I’ll be delving more into the process of making that dream a reality, but first I wanted to review the life of an entrepreneur and the reality of starting your own business. Some of you may be thinking – “But I’m a designer and I’m doing this to focus on design!” I hate to burst anyone’s bubble or dream, but the truth of the matter is that you’ll most likely only be spending a small part of your time on design and the rest on running your business. Which is why it’s so important to have a great business foundation for yourself and be mentally and financially prepared.

As members, you know BurdaStyle is the destination for modern sewing, patterns, tips, articles, discussions and a community of sewers around the world. We’ve sewed-along and discussed couture, but many of you have recently reached out about taking your sewing ideas to the next level and starting your own clothing line.

I’ve been a BurdaStyle member for a couple of years, and was recently profiled on BurdaStyle’s blog for the pop-up shop for my line Silk and Cyanide this past April in New York City. Taking your requests into consideration, BurdaStyle reached out and asked me to write a series of articles about starting your own business through my story, experience and research.
