Dress It Up, Dress It Down: V-Neck Flutter Dress & Sew-Along Video

104_0514_b_large_medium

Have you seen our new Sew-Along videos on the BurdaStyle Academy site? In the past month we’ve uploaded over 20 videos featuring our expert instructors as they take you through the making of a BurdaStyle pattern from start to finish.

This week we’re highlighting the V-Neck Flutter Dress, which is from the May 2015 issue of BurdaStyle magazine currently one of my favorite patterns. It’s the perfect go-to dress to have in your closet for a last minute cocktail party or for a basic BBQ, you can dress it up or you can dress it down! Even better, you have the opportunity sew the dress along with one of our expert sewers in the sew-along video.

Full Skirts for the Win

In a time when we see so many oversized, boyfriend, boxy styles (all of which I whole-heartedly love by the way) it’s nice to mix things up with something that screams femininity and flatters nearly every figure. Full skirts are in full swing for spring, hitting just below the knee and cinching at the waist with a fuller effect. This look can be styled a multitude of ways and we’ve put together some of our favorite looks including a sweet style for a bridal brunch, a romantic date night look and a downtown cool outfit for afternoons shopping in SoHo.

Buy or Make: Gingham Edition

The sweeter cousin of plaid, gingham is the print of spring 2015. It was popularized by style icon Brigitte Bardot and has the optimistic feeling of 50s and 60s French Riviera-meets-classic-Americana. This past September designers including Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenburg and Altuzarra sent the retro print down the runways in modern silhouettes and unexpected colors. We’ve seen the trend on the street in matching seperates, sweet shirtdresses and button-down shirts playfully tied in the front. It’s easy to wear, understatedly sexy and ultra-feminine, we’ll be wearing this print all season long.

We’ve taken a few of our favorite looks from the runway and paired them with nearly identical BurdaStyle patterns that will help you get the look – for a lot less! Just pick up your favorite gingham printed fabric and get sewing.

Boho Days

It’s that time of year, festival season will officially be kicking off next weekend with the first weekend of Coachella in Indio, CA. Alas, the BurdaStyle team is not going to be in attendance but that doesn’t mean we can’t dress like it. Boho style comes back year after year, evolving but never fading. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite boho BurdaStyle patterns for your sewing pleasure. Check out the below picks that we’ve styled with our most coveted accessories and stop by our full boho curated selection here.

Styling the Retro Blouse

Enjoy the last days of summer in a ladylike ensemble. This pattern was first introduced in 1950, when waists were tiny and skirts had major volume. I decided to flip the silhouette a little with a slim skirt that really highlights this top’s fluttery sleeves.
