Buy or Make: Cape & Wrap Jacket Edition

It’s been said that every year when the leaves change colors and the air gets crisp it’s like a rebirth for us all. Well…we like to think it is, at least for our closets! This fall we can’t wait to sew up a cape. They are so cozy, chic and fun to wear. It can also be a very versatile piece, especially when you get to make it yourself! Lose the sleeves, add a belt, incorporate illusion sleeves, the options are nearly endless!

We’ve chosen a few of our designer cape favorites and paired them with look-a-like BurdaStyle patterns so that you can get the look for way less! Now, we know that you are probably not purchasing $3,000 capes and believe us, we aren’t either! But we love fashion and it’s fun to look at those out-of-reach items and imagine how we can at least look like our outfit cost as much as our car. Fashion is fun, so have a little fun with it!

Celebrity Style Inspiration: Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon is the picture of elegance and class, on and off the red carpet. She’s a natural beauty and her all-American, classic style has made her not only “America’s sweetheart” but a fashion industry darling.

We love that Reese keeps her fashion choices interesting with bold prints and fun accessories while sticking to a pretty solid “uniform.” This often consists of a skirt and blouse/sweater, paired with a structured bag, polished hair and makeup and heels. She consistently looks put together, like she has fun being a girl and putting together a new outfit every morning.

We’ve taken a few styling cues from Reese for spring and paired some of our favorite BurdaStyle patterns that will give you a look so similar to Reese Witherspoon you might catch yourself speaking with a southern drawl!

Celebrate Spring with Florals

It’s officially spring here in the US and we could not be more excited! After a long winter and some serious snow storms we’re welcoming warmer temperatures, sunny days and spending time outside enjoying this rejuvenating time of year. With a new season comes an updated wardrobe and we’re craving bold, floral prints to brighten up our closets.

We’ve rounded up all the BurdaStyle patterns we could get our hands on in our specially curated floral category for spring. Below are a few of our favorites as well as our most coveted floral fabric recommendations from Mood Fabrics.

Sew like the Irish: My St. Patrick's Day Style!

Happy St Patrick’s Day everyone! It is one of my favorite holidays because 1. Green is my favorite color, and 2. I’m Irish! Leggings are the best thing to quickly sew up for any special occasion/themed holiday. I made a pair of green and white leggings using our Leggings Sloper and paneled some different fabrics together. I’ll even wear these after St. Patrick’s Day!

Wear This Dress All Spring

We’re suckers for a timeless dress and it doesn’t get much better than a classic shirt dress. It’s a closet staple that is seeing a huge resurgence this season. Perfect for this transitional time of year when dressing in layers and wearing versatile pieces are a must. It suits every body type and there are a number of ways you can modify this flattering silhouette to suit you and your style. Try an assymetric hemline for an edgy look, stay classic with a button down or go bold with a fun floral printed fabric.

See below just a few of our favorite BurdaStyle shirt dress patterns along with fabric picks from Mood Fabrics. To view the full range of shirt dress patterns, take a look at our specially curated shirt dress category here where you will find plenty of options to choose from!

Wear It With Fringe: DIY Tutorial

Above Image: Polyvore

We see it on the runway, the street and even the red carpet. Fringe is taking over…and we’re pretty into it! The great thing is you can incorprate it into nearly every article of clothing (however, not recommended all at once!) from your vest to your skirt, even your shoes. You already know we are all about the current 70’s renaissance and this is definitely a part of that trend. It adds a boho, free-spirit feel to any outfit and we can’t wait to wear it this spring and summer.

70's Inspired Patterns We Love

Top patterns, clockwise: Long Fur Waistcoat; Flared Tunic; Long 70s Coat; Sleeveless Jumpsuit

You might as well just set your Instagram filter to 1977 because it’s one of the biggest trends of the moment and we can’t get enough of it. Suede, (faux) fur, bell bottoms and wrap dresses – the 70’s brought us so many timeless trends that just continue to come back in style. This year is really about the subtle lapel tailoring, wide pant silhouettes and retro fabrics.

Mastering The Midi Skirt

There’s something wonderfully feminine and graceful about a midi length skirt. Finding the perfect midi can be a little tricky, causing many would-be wearers to stay away in fear of looking short or disproportioned. Luckily, we sewers can customize our very own midi-masterpiece!

This week in frigid New York City, fashionistas alike came together to brave the cold and check out what our favorite designers have in store for the Fall 2015 season. However, we all know the best looks aren’t necessarily on the runway! Some of our favorite style inspiration comes from the front row and outside the tents at Lincoln Center. So we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite looks on and off the runway along with similar BurdaStyle patterns that will get you looking like a runway model, front row celebrity and a street style star.
