As our community is expanding and we are welcoming new members, we thought it would be helpful and informative to communicate how a BurdaStyle Member Project is defined.

Currently, over fifty five thousand member projects have been shared on BurdaStyle. That’s a BIG number!

Our projects section is as diverse as our members. Whether you are inspired by fantastical cos play costumes, retro looks, glamorous ball gowns, or classic and clean silhouettes, there’s certainly something for every taste!

Member projects are the essence of our passionate community. By uploading new creative projects on a daily basis, you have all cultivated this portion of our site to be a rich source of inspiration and learning.

You will always be able to find this definition (along with a lot of other useful info) in our constantly updated FAQ section.

The purpose of our Projects section is for community members to showcase their creativity, garner feedback and provide inspiration. At the core, member projects are a form of storytelling between the creator and their audience, inspiring interaction between the two.

Members who upload projects should have had design input, as well as been strongly involved in the handmade production process of the project posted. This means that the member has helped to design and hand-create all or parts of the creation uploaded. They know their creation; not just its exterior, but the unique, unseen intricacies that make it so special.

We are a community that emphasizes the handmade journey of sewing.

The project description, credits or comments provide a way for members to share this journey with each other. This helps to foster the meaningful interaction seen throughout our community.

The BurdaStyle community is alive and always changing. We are happy to hear your thoughts on our definition and we encourage you to share them in the ‘Comment’ section below.

Ok, obviously. One of those things I tend to automatically tick nowadays, not reading or not remembering even shortly after…

Would it not make sense to develop another definition ‘Who can become a member’ to avoid businesses advertising?

      Hi bekaem,

If you take a look at our Terms of Use (I know, it’s looong!), member rules and qualifications are outlined in detail. When a new member signs up, they must agree to our Terms of Use to join.

Basically, when someone signs up, they are already agreeing not to advertise. This project definition is aimed to help clarify what the Terms of Use already states.

Everyone has something unique to contribute, whether using anothers’ pattern or creating something unique from scratch…that is what is so wonderful about being you….no 2 people would make the exact same thing! Life is grand!!!! :0) I love this website…I love to see and share in others’ creativeness… it’s beautiful…

Surely the vast majority of us don’t have design input into the projects we upload – we just cut out a pattern and sew it up as per the instructions….

Well, you still choose the fabric, the style, the buttons etc. That’s design too :-)!

Give a group of people the same pattern and instructions and see what they come up. Most likely each will have a completely different and unique perspectives on that one pattern. Whether creating or executing an artist endeavor, design is a component.

I agree with ichigogirl and rifka – there’s a lot more design and creativity in sewing-from-a-pattern than is often given credit. Some pattern instructions are almost indecipherable, and you end up ‘inventing’ what is missing, and all patterns+instructions leave large areas unspecified. Besides, designing is a built-in function of our humanity…

Oh good – I was afraid they were setting the boundaries a bit high!
