We want YOU to get more involved, so we are inviting you to step up to a new challenge.
We are in the midst of designing a new variation, a cocktail dress version, of the Malissa dress, which will post on November 17th and will include the original pattern plus instructions on how to modify it.
Next to that variation we would love to see your idea of what the Malissa dress could look like as a cocktail dress.
Design and sew a variation of the Malissa dress and send a photo to team@burdastyle.com . The dress with the most votes will be part of our professional photo shoot along with the BurdaStyle creation.
Additionally, the winner of the contest will receive a CD of high resolution photographs from the photo shoot, a look book with prints and cards with the image on it for you to hand out to friends.
Send in your photo of your variation to team@BurdaStyle.com by the 23rd of September, along with a brief description on the pattern changes you have done.
TIP: Keep it simple. If you are the winner, we will ask you to create the how to explaining the pattern changes as well!!

Hey, I love the inspiration that has come form one little sketch I did. I’ve been busy learning to be a new mom! Hopefully I’ll get to make my own Malissa soon. I love all the shirts and can’t wait to see the cocktail versions.

Very sophisticated. I love the color.

Not sure I like how messy it looks, but I can’t wait to redesign it. I already have great ideas!

Ok, I know many others are thinking it, so I’ll be brave and say it…oh my gosh, that is one ugly dress! The gathers in front, above the bust, makes it look like a moomoo. Even a skinny model looks bad/bloated in that style. The best way to make this into a cocktail dress, is to change everything about it. How on earth did this sloppy-sack-of-a-dress get chosen for this contest? I thought it might be fun to participate in this contest, but I wouldn’t touch that pattern with a ten-foot pole.

Yes, it doesn’t look like a cocktaildress yet. But with a few ammendments it could look like it. I will join the contest and have already a couple of ideas.

Why are shapeless and not form fitting patterns always the ones chosen for the contests? I would look terrible in a dress like that. I have no intention to disrespect the pattern or its creator, I think some girls/ladies would look great in it, it’s just that I don’t have the right body type for it. Girls with small breasts and accentuated hips (like me) look as if they wore a bag in this kind of clothes. I think that after Anda competition, we deserved something completely different. Hence I’m not inspired to join the contest.

Jeez, people. As a wise man would say: “Make it work!”

I’m not a fan of the pattern, I but I love the raglan sleeves and the length of the dress. I saw the drawing for the contest and it was very very good! That is why it was chosen!
I’ll work with the raglan, except I don’t really need a cocktail dress…would have preferred to make it more for the day time, I’ll see what fabrics I’ve got in my stash…Yesterday I was thinking there’s no way this can be changed, today I have about 3 ideas :)

I can’t wait to get started!! I missed the last one. I actually kind of like this dress as it is, but dresses are my specialty.

Hey Scarylou,
Being in the UK does not exclude you from participating! We would love to see your ideas!
I think it is really interesting that you are all having strong feelings and very different opinions. That should be making the end results even more interesting.
For the ones that would prefer a more fitted shape, there are many ways that could turn that dress into a more fitted version!
Looking forward to all the results from you that decide to take the challenge!
Best,
B

I like the idea of a variation contest (I just love variations) but to me the price for the winner is more like a penalty. I wouldn’t want to send my dress off to the US for weeks so it can get photographed. If I sew something, I want to wear it immediately. But I’m looking forward to see the ideas of other Burdastyle members.

the best part of this contest is that it’ll take lots of creativity to change this into a dress that you could wear to a cocktail dress! please people, be nice. think about it, if they chose a form fitting dress for this contest, it wouldn’t be near as much of a challenge!
thanks, burda! i’m really excited for this contest & the results.

I have tried several times (on different computers) to download this file and it says this file can not be found. Am I doing something wrong?

I think this Malissa dress has great potential, and judging by the creative remakes in the Anda dress contest, I bet others on the site think so too! I unfortunately don’t have a sewing machine for the next few weeks, so won’t be remaking it in time for the contest. But someday on my own time!

This dress is not at all cute. It looks like a 70s mod maternity dress. But this is what makes this interesting: turning ugly to pretty. Even though this is my first go at a Burd contest, I’ll give it my best.

So we send the pictures by email and BurdaStyle’s team is the judge? Or do we have to post the creations and the users vote?

I’m hoping to have enough time to enter this competition. I think it is fun and exciting for Burda to give us the opportunity to participate in these competitions. Im still not a very good or experienced sewer but things like this give me the oportunity to push myself and see what I am capable of. Thank you. Do we post the entry in creations as well as email it?

Ugh, no matter what I do it still looks like a bag. I like clothes that flatter my curves and are thinning, not ones that add 50 lbs. Once a moo moo, always a moo moo. There is just too much fabric even after cutting several inches off the sides. I will have to see if anyone can make something that is flattering to a short person with curves.

Even though I am not a fan of the current look of the dress, I think there are so many ways to alter it for a cocktail dress. It seems really obvious to me the simple changes that would turn it into a cocktail dress. I guess it is all about interpretation. Hopefully I have enough time to make it!

I hope everyone is having fun making their own version of the Malissa dress.
