One look at these pages and you know that this isn’t your grandmother’s crewel, but a hip, contemporary update that will have everyone reaching for a needle and thread. And these projects are easy, too, because crewel has no counting, no grids, and no cross-stitch—just beautiful free-form embroidery. Dive right in, guided by a basics chapter that explains how to do the different stitches, ranging from French knots to laid filling. Novices will swiftly move on to the 30 practice designs, all accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams, and a dozen lovely projects. Make a card or keepsake scrapbook embellished with stitched motifs, colorful totes, table runners, and an elegant tryptich.

I recently borrowed this book from the library and I absolutely love it! The dahlia is pretty :)

Probably Spring Anemone. You could have so much fun with different colour combinations, and it’s visually interesting without being to complicated.

They’re all beautiful, but I think my favorite is Sunflower for its simple geometry.

I really like Twinkling Stars! It looks like it would be fun to stitch, and could be done in so many colors. :)

They are all so cute but I really like Ella’s wish!

The motif design is so contemporary, love it!

Nice Work, Katherine Shaughnessy! Your competitively priced book has fun graphics that I would actually like to stitch. There is no old lady stuff here (and I can say that because I am an old lady). Several motifs together can create a sampler quilt, or a spray of the same design in different sizes would look great across sports wear. The designs will be fun to digitize. I think the motif that I will digitize first will be ‘sea anemone’.

I love the dahlia. Little arcs touching, so pretty!

That’s hard because I pretty much like them all, but I am leaning towards the Dahlia because it looks far more complex than it is :)

I love Ella’s Wish.

Well, I can’t decide which one I like more – Twinkling Stars or Seed Pod motif. Think that depends where I’d try to use them. _

My favorite motif is the wonderful seed pod!

This reminds me of my mother. I have a three foot long crane in a cherry blossom tree that she did with crewel embroidery.
