[UPDATE 12/05/2012] – Congratulations to BurdaStyle member watatoe
Comment on our blog for a chance to win a copy of The New Crewel: Exquisite Designs in Contemporary Embroidery.
One look at these pages and you know that this isn’t your grandmother’s crewel, but a hip, contemporary update that will have everyone reaching for a needle and thread. And these projects are easy, too, because crewel has no counting, no grids, and no cross-stitch—just beautiful free-form embroidery. Dive right in, guided by a basics chapter that explains how to do the different stitches, ranging from French knots to laid filling. Novices will swiftly move on to the 30 practice designs, all accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams, and a dozen lovely projects. Make a card or keepsake scrapbook embellished with stitched motifs, colorful totes, table runners, and an elegant tryptich.

I like the Spring Anemone! I have quite a few “grandma” books on crewel embroidery. I never found the examples in the (often black & white) photographs to be inspiring. I’m sure this book will provide plenty of iideas to add to my Alabama Studio Style projects.

I think I like the twinkling stars best…..but I have to say it was hard to choose! Lots of awesome designs in the book! My grandmother used to do crewel, but back then I thought it looked so tedious. I think this book really breathes some fresh air into crewel!

I like the anemone and also the lazy daisy looks like it would be fun to do over and over with color variations. Cool book to focus on circle motifs and let the reader create the end design with combinations and variations~

Ella’s wish is darling and delicate. I could see it as the basis for a pattern that goes from tight to dispersed across a bodice. Would love to try it!
