I’m teaching a rural school group of 3rd and 4th graders stitches for a Christmas gift for their parents. I’d appreciate receiving the Doodle Stitching gift in return for my first post. Don’t you need my mailing address? Thank you.

I do not have a favourite motif but would love to win the Doodle Stitching book for inspiration to help me design my own personal motif! Many years ago I embroidered a small cushion for my first baby, a girl. It was simple stitching with flowers and a verse. My daughter recently became a mother herself to a beautiful baby girl and she also displayed this small cushion in her baby’s bedroom. Hand stitching to me is special and if looked after well can be lasting.

My favorite that I’ve use a lot has been a modern interpretation on Indian traditional embroidery with shisha mirrors. I just love the bright, bold colours and that shiny mirror that winks as you move :)

Once I embroidered a tricycle for my best friend’s baby, and it turned out just lovely! When it comes to embroider something, I usually ask my husband to help me with drawing, he is a graphic designer, perfect for me, as I can’t draw!

A starfish. It reminds me of the story of the little boy on the beach covered in starfish, throwing them back into the sea. When his father pointed out it was pointless throwing them back, as there were tens of thousands, and what difference could one small boy hope to make? The little boy put another one back in the water, and said “it made a difference to that one!”

Yes, they are table coverings hand-sewn by my great aunts. They did a lot of embroidery and tatting. They always embroidered flowers.

My freshman year in college, I spent a painstaking few weeks embroidering “ceci n’est pas une chaussure” on one of my Converse sneakers. It taught me the value of a thimble!

I’ve embroidered a lot of things in my life, since I learned cross stitch and other techniques when I was a child. However, the most recent one was a biscornú I made as a pincushion for myself. (Biscornús are so pretty!).
