Pinkandred-challenge-blog_large

Hey all, so this is the longest title ever, but this challenge is super great and for a great cause!

The Sewing & Stitchery Expo held February 25-28 in Puyallup, WA is the largest consumer sewing show in the country. Coats & Clark is sponsoring this year’s charity Pink & Red Fashion Show, with BurdaStyle hosting the virtual event!

The Coats & Clark Pink & Red Fashion Show is partnering with both the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society to fight the two biggest killers of women in America — heart disease and breast cancer. To honor these two amazing charities we are asking everyone to create an outfit in pink and red. So here’s where the challenge comes in. By submitting a project, you will be entered to win an invitation to model it at the show on Feb 28th, an assortment of Coats & Clark Thread and more!

The project must be predominately pink and red. Any shade of pink or red can be used and the colors do not have to be in the same proportion. For example, a garment may be red with pink trim or accents. Neutral colors such as black or white or a coordinating print can be part of the garment, but pink and red must be the main colors. You must use thread as a design element in the garment. For example—decorative stitching, embroidery, thread painting, topstitching—be creative! Garment can be from or based on a commercial pattern or an original design. Click for free BurdaStyle patterns.

You have until 11:59pm EST January 31st 2010 to either upload or email an image of the completed Pink & Red garment to BurdaStyle.

E-mail photograph(s) of your entry with your name, complete mailing address and e-mail address to BurdaStyle: submissions (at) burdastyle.com or upload it as a project to the BurdaStyle website. You must put “Pink & Red” in the subject line or title of the project, if this is not somewhere in the title, we cannot guarantee it will make it into the slideshow.

I’ve got a question about your rules. It says: “Acceptance of the prize(s) constitutes permission for Coats & Clark, BurdaStyle and Sewing & Stitchery Expo to use the winner names and/or likeness, biographical material and/or entry (including an altered form of the entry) for advertising and promotional purposes without compensation, unless prohibited by law.” Does that mean, if someone bothers to create his own design and is giving all his passion to it, it may happen that you snag his idea for your commercial use without paying the “real designer” for it? If so – it seems as if this contest isn’t a nice and fun event for the sewing-community but for fashion designers who are running out of ideas and so taking advantage of other creative people… Sorry for the criticism, I’m not English/American, maybe I unterstod sth. wrong.

Haven’t seen it mentioned in anyone’s post – but potential competitors, you do realize that thread must be part of the design element, not just pink/red fabric. Just hate to see someone spend hours on an entry and not have any thread featured, and then be disqualified. Hoping to have my entry posted soon.

Yeah, I saw that. I’m using pink and red threads in my serger and sewing machine, but trying to decide how to use it as a design element as well.

I unfortunately have to back out of this contest. But instead I’m making my own version of the Fatima with puff sleeves. I’m attending an 80’s themed Sweetheart ball for work next week and thought it was the perfect base to start with haha. Unfortuntely I can’t bear to spend time making somthing i wouldn’t wear more than once and just can’t see myself in a pink or red puff sleeve dress with lace. So black it will be. I’ll post it as my first project since I’ve joined the site.

Can’t wait to see what everyone ele comes up with though!

Should the dress be worn by a model? (New here.) Or just a photograph of the dress is sufficient. (?)

It’s always best if it is on someone so that everyone can get a sense of proportion. Have fun with the shoot and pretend to be a model for a day!

It was the 21st before? Very happy about that cause my fabric hasn’t arrived yet.
