Highlighted as one of our most active clubs, the BSC of Brooklyn, New York is filled with super-talented creatives from all sewing skill levels who come together and share their love for all things sewing!

Since it’s inception last year, their club has proven to be extremely beneficial to their individual growth as sewers. The following is written by Valerie (brooklynstitch), the co-leader of their club. If you are interested in forming a club of your own, perhaps hearing a leaders’ own experience will show that it certainly isn’t as difficult as it my seem. In fact, it is an amazing way to have fun with fellow sewers right in your area!

“I’ve been co-running the Sewing Club with ”http://www.burdastyle.com/profiles/flowerhead/my_activity">flowerhead since the Spring. We met on the BurdaStyle website after the call went out to start a sewing club, and then we set up a time to meet in a cafe. We both live close to one another in Brooklyn and are enthusiastic sewers who like to make beautiful, well-crafted clothes for ourselves. We hit it off right away. Co-running a club seemed a little less daunting to begin with.

About 19 people have ‘joined’ the club online, but I think only about 12 have ever attended the meetings. Usually we number about 8 people. We get together every 3-4 weeks at someone’s house (often mine). One night we met at a cool bar in Brooklyn for a holiday outing. [I think] that our sewing club could meet anywhere there’s space. We never actually sew together. We bring our most recent creations, talk about them and show them to each other. We also share patterns, books, magazines, and ideas. I don’t feel like we need to sew together. It’s just so great to talk about what we’re working on and what our goals are with sewing. There are beginners, people who grew up sewing, and even a couple of people who work in the fashion industry. Everyone benefits from the meetings and the exchange of ideas. We also do fabric swaps from time to time.

The meetings have become an incentive to make something new and to finish those projects. It definitely spurs you on to have someone ask you ‘Did you finish that skirt?,’ and then to give you feedback on it. We did two sew-alongs when we started the club – a simple dress and a tunic. Right now we are all picking our own patterns. The best part is that the club is made up of really nice, interesting and creative people. It’s a great bunch of women who I might not have met otherwise. [A BSC] is a great way to meet people who love to sew, and to take your own sewing to another level."

Inspired and ready to join? Check out our BSC Directory, or form one of your own.

Best,

David @ BurdaStyle
