Thinking of starting a BurdaStyle Sewing Club but don’t know what to expect? Many first-time leaders share similar worries, but often end up having very good experiences! Here are recaps of two leaders who hosted meetings for the first time.
<a href= “http://burdastyleclubs.ning.com/group/ltrainbrooklyngroup#”>BSC L-Train Brooklyn, NY, USA
Leader: Alaina Z.
“We held our first meeting [September 23rd] at The Archive Cafe. I had the pleasure of meeting Helena (aka – <a href= “http://www.burdastyle.com/profiles/Helenay/my_activity”>Helenay), who is a novice sewer but is looking forward to making a formal gown in the near future and learning about alterations.
Because several potential members couldn’t make it tonight, we didn’t make any plans. Regarding [the] venue — The Archive Cafe is a nice space, not too crowded, but the lights were dimmed and there was a movie playing (“A Very Long Engagement,” so at least it was French). I can see the dim light as being a real drawback should we ever want to have demos. However, the barista seemed eager to please and would probably do anything he could to accommodate us.
I plan to hold another meeting next Wednesday to hopefully meet some more members”
Thousands of miles away, <a href= “http://burdastyleclubs.ning.com/group/bscsofiabulgaria”>BSC Sofia, Bulgaria conducted their first meeting a few days later. Here’s what Leader Gergana S. had to say about it:
“Our newly established club had its first meeting on Sunday [October 4th] in Sofia. There were 6 people — 3 of them were existing members of the club and 3 new ones. The event turned to be a very nice one. We had different activities for each taste — knitting, embroidering and sewing. Among our first projects will be shawls and shopping bags. I have a very large collection of Burda magazines and we spent some time browsing them for new ideas. Soon we will upload pictures of our projects.”
See, first meetings aren’t so bad! If you are afraid of starting a club of your own, you should know that most club leaders have very positive experiences on their first meeting day. We also provide a comprehensive leadership packet to get you started and ease your concerns.

Ooh we should organise some international sewing club exhanges
You could just get a few people together and just keep it really informal, we just started round a friends house. There might be someone who would want to act as leader when you leave too. x

Aw that sounds awesome :) I was really hoping that there would be clubs in my area, but sadly not! I’m not really in a position to start a club either as I’m on my year abroad and can’t commit to becoming a leader. Thought about maybe starting one up when I get home to Swansea, but again, only there for a year… such a pickle!

Hey, just thought I’d update on the first meeting of the sewing club in Chorlton, Manchester, UK. I was pretty nervous about it and worried it wouldn’t go well but it turned out great!
I booked the meeting room of the local library, and there were 8 of us. Most people knew each other already but there were a few new faces which was lovely!
The first 30 mins or so we just drank tea, ate cake and chatted! Then people gradually began to get on with projects, with the more experienced sewers helping the beginners! Once we’ve had a few meetings we’re going to try to organise some demos, as it’d be good to have a bit more of a format to it!
Need to start advertising for new members now, anyone who wants to come along can just join here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=163071212424&ref=mf also theres a bsc group http://burdastyleclubs.ning.com/group/chorltonsewingclub
Everyone’s welcome (we also have cake!) x

Thank you so much for your update! I’m glad you had a great time.

I’m new on BurdaWorld, a novice in sewing, but are already excited about all the energy and dinamism of Burda’s members. Good Initiative David, nice post, keep working. Jorge

Wow, it’s so nice to read about other leaders experiences, great post David, how exciting for everyone?! :) I encourage anyone to start up a club in their area, or if one already exists, find out when the next meeting is a go along. Still not sure? How about finding another member who is just as keen and share the responsibilities, that’s how sewanista and I do it, we make a great team. You’ll meet so many new friends and sharing our hobby of sewing benefits all. Trust me, you’ll come away enthusiastic and ready to get to that project you might have been holding off, it’s so very inspiring, good luck! :) xx
